Partyliner Phone Security Tips

Dark Angel claims to have all these phone skills, yet other than a little social engineering has anyone seen him do anything to anyone? The most I have ever seen him do is pull an address from a phone number or name from a phone number or phone number from an address. Guess what any moron with a computer can surf the web and do that very same thing. Also, any moron can call the phone company and say they are from Icris or a number of other phone auditing organizations and fast talk an inexperienced phone company rep.

So here are a few tips to protect yourself from phone phreakers aka Social Engineers such as Dark Angel.

1.) Put a DAN CODE on your phone account, its usually a 4-6 digit code that will be asked for everytime you try to make changes to your phone account.

2.) If for some reason your information is used to shut off your phone, call the phone company and have them run a fraud investigation into why the phone was terminated as all called to the phone company are recorded and saved when a phone number is terminated.

3.) You should take the time to call the phone company and mention the partyline, and mention the fact that some of the people on the phone chat line have been known to commit acts of fraud to shut off phone services or make changes to them. This surprisingly will go a long way as the rep. will note your account and it will be a saved note on your account if anything goes wrong. Also make sure you leave a note on the account to never verify with any outside organization your phone records, or personal information such as address or social security number.

4.) Also during that same conversation you can request that before any changes are made to your account that the rep. handling the changes call you at your home phone number and confirm it and not to make changes in you can not be reached via home phone.

5.) When setting up phone accounts or changing phone numbers, you should ALWAYS request a non-listed and non-published phone number. You have to ask for both as the non-published feature will keep it out of the phone book and the non-listed feature will prevent the phone company from listing your phone number on call lists which get forwarded to internet sites which are phone directories online. Also make sure you confirm that the number will not show up on a caller id when you call into it. This will prevent you from accidentally and mistakenly giving your phone number to other people by calling them.

These are just a few tips to protect yourself, any more I can think of I will pass along to you in the future right here. ~Aries your friendly neighborhood God of War!!! :-P
