Welcome one and all to the debut issue of GoodNews - a new online "pixel-pub" dedicated to sharing the glory of our Lord and Savior, as well as the history of our great National Pastime. Over the last few years, we at the Pinstripe Press have been blessed with many successful publishing ventures including a popular online newsletter (dedicated to the New York Yankees) called The Highlander . We initially started that project to provide a free online forum for serious baseball fans to share their talents with others. However, since January of 2003, that site has taken on a life of it's own while featuring the best in both professional and amateur baseball commentary, cartoons, photography and player interviews. With that in mind, I believe that the same passion and interest that we experience on The Highlander can also be generated for a Christian-based baseball publication. GoodNews will feature the same in-depth study, but with a more meaningful focus on Christian ballplayers, ministries and more. Studying the history of baseball may make us smarter, but studying the Word of God makes us better. I hope you enjoy our efforts. Please share them with others. Your critiques, suggestions and participation is always welcome! Thank you and God Bless.

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. James 3:9-13 NIV

Born: Betsaida, in Galilee
Fisherman who Became Fisher of Men

Originally named Simon
, this Apostle is more popularly known to Christians as Peter (or Simon Peter). He was originally from Bethsaida (on the west coast of the Sea of Galilee) in the Galilee Region of northern Israel. Both Peter and his brother Andrew were fishermen, along with James and John, who all became members of The Twelve Apostles. It was Peter's brother Andrew who actually first found The Lord after hearing John The Baptist near the Jordan River proclaiming Jesus Christ as "Lamb of God" (John 1:29-36). Andrew then went and brought Simon to Jesus (John 1:41). Jesus declared that Simon would be called "Cephas", which was an Aramaic name equivalent to the Greek moniker "Petros", from which the name Peter was originally derived. The term Cephas means "a small stone," while Jesus Christ is the Rock Of Ages. He stated "And I tell you, you are Peter (Cephas), and on this Rock I will build My church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it." (Matthew 16:18 RSV). The Rock that The Lord was speaking of could only have been Himself. Peter later became a prominent founding member of the new Christian church before being imprisoned and crucified by the Romans (under Nero) in 67AD. In spite of all his suffering, Peter's faith never wavered and he converted his jailers, Processus, Martinianus, and forty-seven others before his execution.

Mariano Rivera
Born: November 29, 1969, Panama City, Panama
Right-handed Pitcher (Relief) New York Yankees

Mariano, the Yankees' top relief pitcher, is arguably the most effective closer in postseason baseball history, recording final outs in three Yankee world title seasons (1998, 1999 and 2000). Mariano earned World Series MVP honors in 1999 (just the third relief pitcher to win the award) and has a 6-1 mark with 25 saves and an ERA below 1.00 in postseason play. A deeply religious man, Rivera financed the construction of a church in his native Panama City and can often be seen reading the Bible in the Yankees' clubhouse. At a church service honoring him in Panama after the 1999 season, he announced that he would spend four more years in baseball and then retire to become an evangelical minister. Sports

Did you know? Mariano Rivera owns the Major League record for most postseason saves (25) as well as most World Series saves (8) and he established the longest scoreless innings streak in postseason play (33.1IP). More: Mariano Rivera - Man with a Message
