1
Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
2 By the
seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day
he rested from all his work. 3 And God blessed the seventh day and
made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had
done. – Genesis 2:1-3 [NIV]
It’s a covenant of love. That’s right. It’s a love thing! There is no doubt as to God’s will for His people. It is the same as we have for those that we love and are responsible for. Our concerns are based on love. So are His! We need to realize that as our loving heavenly Father, He wants what’s best for His kids! Guess what? That’s you and me!
God’s institution of the Sabbath is a love thing. It’s for you and me. It is a time of reverent reflection to
holiness and a time to rest, to refresh and to regear for the tough stuff that
we face weekly. We were created to
praise and worship our Lord. This is a
time set aside to do just that. He Who
created us also knows that we need the most!
He actually set a fine example for us. God had worked for 6 days, completing His
creative work that was one constant miraculous happening after another. Matthew Henry commented that He didn’t rest
out of exhaustion, but out of pleasure and a great feeling of fulfillment. It seems that it was a time of reflection
and satisfaction. Not a bad thing. We can do that. Actually, we must do that! We need to do so for our own peace of heart and mind. We need to do so to set aside our
hearts in complete surrender to praise and worship the Lord! We need to take this time to reflect
on His goodness in helping us through the past week. There have been challenges and discouragements. But our times of rest and reflection also
reveal a time to reflect on precious blessings, as well.
As such, it is a holy day; a day of reverence and
respect, a day of praise and worship in sincere appreciation for Whom He is in
each of our hearts and lives. It’s a
day dedicated to lift our hearts to He Who saves and sanctifies us to the
uttermost! Yes, - It’s a love thing!
