MoEZ Tips & Hints

YOU ALWAYS GO UNDER THE FRONT VERTICAL STRAND AS USUAL BUT WHEN YOU GET TO THE END THE WAY TO MAKE IT THE SAME AS THE RIGHT SIDE IS TO INSERT IT UNDER THE FRONT VERTICAL STRAND AND ALSO GO UNDER THE SHORT STRAND RIGHT BEHIND IT. IF YOU TURN THE AFGHAN TO THE RIGHT SO YOU CAN SEE THE SIDE OF THE LAST STITCH YOU WILL SEE THE FRONT BAR AND IF YOU TUG ON THAT STRAND YOU WILL SEE A SHORT STAND JUST LEFT OF THE OTHER STRAND YOU ARE TUGGING ON AND IT WILL MOVE, THESE ARE THE STRANDS THAT YOU GO UNDER AND PULL UP A LOOP. NOW YOUR LEFT SIDE WILL LOOK LIKE THE RIGHT SIDE. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO EDGE LATER, YOU DON'T HAVE TO. VAL

TO AVOID A HOLE WHEN YOU CHANGE COLORS: (2 WAYS)
1) PICK UP THE NEW COLOR FROM UNDERNEATH THE ONE YOU ARE ABOUT TO DROP.---VAL
2) DROP THE COLOR YOU ARE WORKING WITH OVER THE COLOR YOU ARE ABOUT TO PICK UP, THIS IS THE SAME THING BUT SOMETIMES PEOPLE FIND THIS EASIER TO DO. BY PICKING UP YOUR NEW COLOR UNDERNEATH ON THE RETURN ROW YOU WON'T HAVE THE LARGE HOLE. HOPE THIS HELPS. ---VAL

TO AVOID CURLING: (2 WAYS)
1) 2 ROWS OF THE PURL REALLY WORK TO KEEP IT FROM CURLING!!!! ONE ROW CURLS A LITTLE BUT THE 2 ROWS KEEPS IT FLAT. OF COURSE AT THE END OF YOUR PROJECT YOU SHOULD USE 2 ROWS OF THE PURL TO MAKE IT LOOK EVEN. --EVELYN IN KY
2) ALTERNATE THE PURL AND BASIC STITCH FOR TWO ROWS (ONE PURL STITCH, ONE BASIC STITCH, ONE PURL STITCH, ONE BASIC STITCH, ECT) --??

HOW TO GET ENDS TO STAY PUT AFTER TUCKING IN
1) USE FABRIC GLUE ---???

HOW TO READ A GRAPH:
STARTING AT BOTTOM OF GRAPH-
LEFTIES: READ THE GRAPH FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, BOTTOM TO TOP ---CIS
RIGHTIES: READ RIGHT TO LEFT, BOTTOM TO TOP ---CIS
STARTING AT TOP OF GRAPH -
LEFTIES: READ RIGHT TO LEFT -- VAL
RIGHTIES: READ LEFT TO RIGHT -- VAL

HOW TO READ A ROW COUNT IF YOU ARE LEFT HANDED:
1) START AT THE END OF THAT ROW AND COUNT BACK TO THE "START" IN OTHER WORDS, IF LINDA'S ROW COUNT READS: 3W 2BL 2B 3GR 2BL 6PR 2YL 3W - THEN YOU HAVE TO "MOCHET" 3W 2YL 6PR 2BL 3GR 2B 2BL 3W. ---???

CHAPPED FINGERS
1) VASELINE VERY GOOD. TRY GREASING YOUR HANDS UP REAL WELL THEN PUTTING A PAIR OF COTTON SOCKS OVER THEM WHILE YOU SLEEP. ANOTHER GREAT ITEM IS 'BAG BALM.' YOU CAN BUY IT AT FEED STORES (EG: SOUTHERN STATES) AND IT'S WONDERFUL! --TRISH
2) CORNHUSKERS LOTION WHEN YOU GO TO BED AT NIGHT. . - MRS. CLAWS

KEEPING YARN ON THE HOOK
1) RUBBER BAND OR HAIR BAND ON THE END ---???
2) LITTLE HAPPY FACE BALL THAT GOES ON YOU CAR ANTENNA ---???
3) HOLD YOUR HOOK AT THE END WITH YOUR HAND HEEL RESTING ON THE COLORED SURFACE, BY DOING THIS YOU STOP THE LOOPS FROM COMING OFF AND YOU USE YOUR WRIST AND HAND LESS, IT IS LIKE USING A LONG LEVER. I KNOW THAT IT FEELS AWKWARD AT FIRST BUT WITH SOME USE YOU WILL FINDTHAT IT IS EASIER THAN DOING IT THE OTHER WAY. YOU AREN'T SUPPORTING THE WT OF THE HOOK AND THE AGHAN THIS WAY, ---VALERIE OKC

WHAT HOOK FOR THE BORDERS?
1) IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW IT LOOKS ONCE I START IT. IF IT IS TOO LOOSE, I CHANGE TO A SMALLER HOOK (THINNER). --- LINDA FROM NY

PREFERRED SIZE MOEZ HOOK FOR YOUR GHANS?
RED --- MOST LADIES ON THIS LIST

HOW TO MAKE A ROW COUNT
1) PUT A RULER JUST UNDER THE ROW YOU ARE COUNTING AND AS YOU COUNT EACH SQUARE, MAKE A SMALL PEN MARK IN IT SO YOU KNOW YOU HAVE DONE THAT ONE. THEN WHEN YOU GET TO THE 10TH ROW OR WHATEVER ROW HAS THE DARKER GRID LINE, MAKE AN INK LINE ALL ACROSS. ----LINDA FROM NY
2) TRY TO LOOK AWAY MORE OFTEN. ----LINDA FROM NY
3) TYPE IT UP ON THE COMPUTER AND SAVE TO A FLOPPY DISK, PRINT UP THE PAGES AND WORK FROM THAT. THIS WAY IF YOU NEED TO MAKE ANY CORRECTIONS, YOU CORRECT FROM THE FLOPPY. ----LINDA FROM NY

HOW MUCH YARN DO I NEED?
1) THE RED HOOK COMES OUT TO 4 INCHES PER STITCH. THAT'S PART A AND PART B; I DID 20 STITCHES OF AFGHAN STITCH, ABOUT 5 ROWS, AND MEASURED AS I RIPPED IT BACK OUT. PICK THE GRAPH YOU WANT, COUNT THE STITCHES, MULTIPLY BY **YOUR** GAUGE WITH THE HOOK AND YARN YOU WILL BE USING AND HAVE AT IT. MIGHTY MIGHTY HANDY TO KNOW HOW MUCH YARN TO PUT ON A BOBBIN OR CUT OFF THE SKEIN OR WHATEVER FOR EACH COLOR PATCH, TOO. ---BRENDA IN AZ

KEEPING YOUR PLACE ON A GRAPH
1) MAKE A COPY OF THE PATTERN, IF YOU THINK YOU WILL EVER WANT TO USE IT AGAIN. THEN, ON THE COPY, WHEN YOU FINISH A ROW, LIGHTLY PENCIL IN (GRAY OUT) THAT ROW. YOU WILL STILL BE ABLE TO SEE THE COLOR THROUGH THE LIGHT PENCIL MARKINGS, YET, IT WILL GIVE YOU A VISUAL AID AS TO WHERE YOU LEFT OFF. ---ANGIE IN TEXAS
2) FIRST TAKE IT TO KINKOS AND HAVE IT ENLARGED (EASIER ON THE EYES) AND COPIED IN FULL COLOR. THEN LAMINATE SO YOU CAN MARK OFF ROWS AS YOU GO AND REMOVE THE MARKS WHEN YOU'RE DONE AND STILL HAVE A NICE CLEAN PATTERN TO USE LATER. --- NANCY

I MAKE A COPY OF MY GRAPH AND THEN PUT IT ON ONE OF THOSE METAL BOARDS WITH A MAGNETIC LINE MAGNIFIER ON IT. THE MAGNIFIER IS CLEAR AND HAS A RED LINE IN THE MIDDLE SO YOU CAN SEE THE LINE YOU ARE ON, THE ONE BEFORE AND THE ONE AFTER. IT HELPS TO KEEP YOU ON TRACK BY NOT COVERING THE PREVIOUS ONE. I PUT THE STRIP MAGNETS BELOW IT AND THE KEEPS IT FROM SHIFTING JUST IN CASE IT GETS JOSTLED. ; ) VAL

THE PURL STITCH IS JUST LIKE THE REGULAR EXCEPT YOU START WITH THE YARN IN FRONT OF YOUR WORK INSTEAD OF BEHIND. I HAVE MY STUDENTS DROP IT IN FRONT, INSERT HOOK UNDER THE NEXT VERTICAL BAR, PICK UP THE DROPPED YARN AND GO UNDER THE HOOK..UP THE BACK.. AND OVER THE TOP (IN OTHER WORDS YARN OVER, JUST MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE GOING UP BEHIND THE HOOK AND OVER THE TOP OF THE HOOK), THEN PULL THE YARN THROUGH TO MAKE A LOOP ON THE HOOK. VAL

I HAVEN'T TRIED DOING ANYTHING ON PCSTITCH, BUT FROM ART LESSONS I TOOK AGES AGO, IF YOU ARE DOING A FACE, IT SHOULD ALWAYS START AS AN EGG OR OVAL SHAPE, THEN, IMAGE IT CUT IN 1/3RDS FROM THE TOP DOWN, THE LIP LINE STARTS AT THE BOTTOM THIRD, THE NOSE (NOSTRILS) BEGIN AT THE MIDDLE 3RD AND THE MIDDLE OF THE EYES WILL BEGIN AT THE TOP THIRD. THE EYEBROWS WILL ALWAYS HAVE THE EPOC OR TOP OF THE CURVE AT THE IRIS PART OF THE EYE, AND THE OUTSIDE OF THE NOSTRILS WILL BE WHERE THE INSIDE OF THE EYE SOCKET STARTS. THESE ARE CONSTANTS. IF YOU WIDEN THE FACE, YOU WILL WIDEN THE EYES AND THE NOSTRILS ON THE OUTSIDE WILL, NATURALLY FOLLOW ALONG AND WIDEN. IF YOU MAKE THE HEAD LONGER, THE BASE OF THE NOSE WILL ELONGATE, BUT THE NOSTRILS WILL ALWAYS BE WHERE THE EYE SOCKETS ARE, AND THE ARCH OF THE EYEBROW WILL BE WHERE THE MIDDLE OF THE EYE IS. THEN YOU CAL ALWAYS PROCEED FROM THERE TO MAKE A ROUND FACE, A NARROW FACE, ETC. START WITH THESE BASICS FOR ANY FACE, YOU CAN EVEN START WITH THEM TO MAKE ANY NUMBER OF ANIMAL FACES, JUST BEGIN WITH THESE BASICS, AND THEN ELABORATE ON THEM FOR ANY FACE, ANIMAL OR HUMAN. ANY QUESTIONS? CIS

THE EDGINGS ARE REAL EASY. I GOT THE IDEA FROM JACQUI.
ROW 1. SC ALL AROUND WITH 3 SC IN 3EACH CORNER
ROW 2. SL ST TO MIDDLE OF 3SC IN CORNER CH2 2DC IN SAME SPACE, SK 2 ST 3DC IN NEXT ST ALL AROUND WITH 3DC CH 1 3DC IN EACH CORNER
ROW 3. REPEAT ROW 2
DEPENDING ON MY MOOD AND HOW THE GHAN LOOKS I CONTINUE REPEATING ROW 2 UNTIL I THINK IT IS OK. SOMETIMES JUST ONCE OR TWICE. I ALSO CHANGE COLORS DOING THIS. THEN THE LAST ROW IS JUST A SC IN EACH ST AND CH 1 IN THE CORNER ALL AROUND LINDA IN NY

THANKS
THE BORDER IS JUST A COUPLE OF SINGLE CROCHET AND ON THE LAST ROW I CHAIN 6 SNGLE CROCHET IN THE NEXT CHAIN 6 AND SO ON THE I GO BACK AND GO IN MY CHAIN 6 AND HOOK THEM ALL TOGETHER TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE A BRAID THE CORNERS I DID CH.6 SC. CH.6 SO YOU HAVE TWO LOOPS IN THE CORNER ITS JUST SOMETHING I MADE UP

ITS A COUPLE OF SINGLE CROCHET ROWS AND THE NEXT ROUND IS A REVERSED CROSS STITCH
REVERSED CROSS STITCH GOES LIKE SKIP NEXT ST, DC IN NEXT ST, WORKING AROUND DC JUST MADE, DC IN SKIPPED ST, AND SO ON

DRINKING STRAW BOBBINS:
JUST GET A DRINKING STRAW. I GET THE BIG THICK ONES FROM JACK IN THE BOX (FOR MILKSHAKES?) AND CUT THEM IN HALF. THEN WRAP THE YARN AROUND THE MIDDLE A COUPLE TIMES TO ANCHOR IT, THEN CONTINUE IN A FIGURE 8. THAT FOR ME IS CLOCKWISE AROUND THE TOP, HOLDING THE STRAW IN THE MIDDLE, AND DOWN COUNTERCLOCKWISE AROUND THE BOTTOM CROSSING WHERE I'M HOLDING THE STRAW. TURN THE STRAW A QUARTER TURN EVERY FIVE WRAPS OR SO TO AVOID THE BIG BUMP WHERE IT CROSSES. FIGURE OUT HOW MUCH OF THAT COLOR YOU WANT (GAUGE AND NUMBER OF STITCHES FOR THE COLOR), WIND THAT MUCH, THREAD THE YARN DOWN THROUGH THE STRAW, AND WORK WITH THE END THAT COMES OUT. OBOY! THAT READS FUNNY, BUT I JUST TRIED IT FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS AND IT ACTUALLY WORKED! TRY IT AND SEE, THEN ASK QUESTIONS IF I CAN HELP ANY MORE.

SOMEBODY HAS BEEN TALKING ABOUT NOT USING BOBBINS, JUST LEAVE THE END OF YARN LOOSE, AND I PLAN TO TRY THAT BUT HAVE MY BOBBINS ALL WOUND FOR THE CURRENT PROJECT. SO...LATER

YARN_MOM
MRSSEE229 WROTE:
I HAVE TO TELL YOU ABOUT MY NEW SYSTEM, SOMEONE SAID THEY USED THE WALLPAPER TRAYS TO HOLD YARN A WHILE BACK AND LAST WEEK IN A STORE I FOUND ONE. IT IS BLACK AND ABOUT 33 INCHES LONG AND VERY STRONG. THIS IS MY 7TH MOEZ AFGHAN AND IT IS GOING GREAT, WITH NO TANGLES. FIRST I USE A YARN WINDER TO MAKE BALLS AND PUT THEM IN BAGGIES. I PUT THE COLORS IN THE TRAY IN THE ORDER I USE THEM AND WHEN I AM WORKING THE LOOPS OFF, AFTER I CHANGE COLOR, I PICK UP THE BAGGIE WITH THE NEW COLOR FROM UNDER THE OLD COLOR AND BRING IT OVER THE OLD COLOR AND PUT IT BACK IN THE TRAY. NO TANGLE AT THE END OF THE ROW. I HAVE A BASKET ON THE FLOOR WITH ALL THE BAGGIES OF YARN AND ONLY PUT THE ONES I AM USING IN THE TRAY. I HAVE LEARNED A LOT FROM ALL OF YOU AND WANTED TO SHARE THIS WITH YOU. I LURKE A LOT.
HUGS CAROLYN SO CALIF.

THE MAIN THING I DO DIFFERENTLY IS CAST ON AS IF TO KNIT TO GET THE FIRST ROW OF LOOPS ON MY HOOK.
HAS GOOD INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CAST ON I USE. IT'S HANDY ALSO BECAUSE YOU CAN SEE QUICKLY HOW MANY LOOPS THE HOOK CAN HANDLE.

AS YOU CAN SEE, THESE ARE COMPILED OVER TIME. HOPE EVERYBODY GOT ACCREDITED. ANGIE HAS MOST OF THEM ON HER SITE, TOO. HOLLER IF I CAN HELP ANY FURTHER.

ENJOY! BRENDA IN AZ SAGUAROAZ@QWEST.NET
