PHILADELPHIA TAX LAWYER PROSPERED IN ORLANDO THE ORLANDO SENTINEL August 16, 2000 Author: Sandra Mathers of The Sentinel Staff Estimated printed pages: 2 Stephen T. Dean was a Mainline Philadelphia lawyer who left the big city to spend more time with his family in a quiet burg in Central Florida. The burg was Orlando, and the year was 1959. And Dean, the town's first real tax attorney, soon found himself handling some big-name clients, such as Martin Andersen, former owner and publisher of The Orlando Sentinel, and A. Duda & Sons, a leading agricultural company. Dean of Longwood, a founding partner of Dean, Mead, Egerton, Bloodworth, Capouano & Bozarth, died Monday of a blood disorder. He was 89. "Steve had practiced at the highest levels [in Philadelphia] and he knew tax law inside and out," said law partner Darryl Bloodworth. "When he arrived, there weren't any tax lawyers here." Dean spent nine years with the civil firm of Anderson, Rush, Ward and Dean before founding the Orlando office of Carlton Fields Ward Emmanuel Smith and Cutler, a Tampa-based law firm. He started Dean Mead in 1980. There he was known for his sense of humor, storytelling and sound advice, Bloodworth said. "He inspired confidence and was very encouraging to young attorneys," said his colleague, who joined Dean's firm out of law school in 1971. Dean's daughter, Chery Gallagher of Amelia Island, described her father as "a rock," who enjoyed sponsoring foreign exchange students, was president of the former Florida Symphony in the 1970s and loved to travel. "He was so clear on the right thing to do," she said. "He never struggled with decisions." Dean was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Orlando. He also is survived by his wife, Lucille; daughters, Jo of Fair Haven, Vt., and Lynn Dye of La Grange, Ga.; brother, Daniel of Naples, and five grandchildren. Philadelphia Tax Lawyer Prospered In Orlando OBITUARIES August 16, 2000|By Sandra Mathers of The Sentinel Staff Stephen T.
