Welcome to my "Breizh" page. "Breizh", "Bretagne" and "Brittany" are all the same word for a region of France that is special to me. My parents arrived to the United States from Brittany in the early sixties. I never felt much pride in being "Breton" till I started looking up my family tree. Most of my family still resides in France, many in Brittany. I have been there numerous times and always love returning to my ancestors home. The "Morbihan" is my ancestral home.
Brittany is surrounded by three bodies of water: the English Channel to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Bay of Biscay to the south.
Brittany has two languages in additon to french. The lanugauges are:
Breton (Ar Brezhoneg) is spoken in the western region. Breton is a Celtic language that is similar to Welsh and Gaelic.
Gallo is the other. It is spoken in the eastern part of Brittany. It is a roman language that is related to french.
The flag of Brittany is called the "Gwenn ha Du" (White and Black). It was created by Morvan Marchal in 1925. The flag consists of nine stripes alternating black and white.
The five black stripes stand for the Gallo region: Rennes, Nantes, Dol, Saint-Malo and Penthievre.
The white stripes stand for the Breton region: Leon, Tregor, Cornovaille and Vannes.
The ermines came from the "Duchy of Brittany" flag.
