
Enrolled as private in Co. F on 9/29/62, Patton T. Campbell was promoted to corporal on 3/4/62.
William E. Derning, a son of Samuel and Electa (Dickinson) Derning, was born in Jackson Township, Tioga county, Pa., Sept. 7, 1844.
William F. Jester mustered in as a sergeant, Co. A, 58th PA Vols. on 9/16/61. He reenlisted at Little Washington, North Carolina on 1/1/64 and was mustered out with Co. A as a Veteran Volunteer on 1/24/66.
Enlisting from Erie County, Pa., Thomas Julius Hoskinson was mustered in as first lieutenant of Co. E, 58th Pa. Vols. on 9/1/1961. He was promoted to captain of the same organization on 3/1/63 and resigned his commission on 9/9/64.
A resident of Philadelphia before the War, Montgomery Martin was mustered in as the captain of Co. A, 58th Pa. Vols. He was transferred and promoted from to major of the Regiment on 1/1/62. Upon the succession of Lieut. Col. Carlton B. Curtis to colonel on 6/2/63, Martin was promoted to lieutenant colonel. He commanded the 58th Pa. Vols. at this rank from the resignation of Curtis on 7/2/63 until he was discharged on 9/29/64.

He was promoted to sergeant on 3/11/63, and reenlisted as a Veteran Volunteer at Little Washington on 1/1/64.
He was promoted to first sergeant on 1/1/65 and discharged by general order as a Veteran on 12/6/65.


William E. Derning (USAMHI)
He was mustered into Co. G as a private on 10/9/61 when he was just 16 years old, and reenlisted as a Veteran Volunteer on 1/1/64 at Little Washington, North Carolina. He was transferred from Co. G to Co. E, 58th PA Inf. on 3/1/64. On June 16, 1864, he was injured by concussion of a shell in front of Petersburg. He was twice furloughed: in June, 1864, he received his Veteran Volunteer's furlough and in June, 1865 he was again furloughed for 30 days. On 10/1/64, he was promoted to corporal, and on 8/12/65 he was promoted to sergeant. He was discharged by Special Order 428 on 8/19/65. After the War, he lived in Somers Lane, Pa., was a member, senior vice commander and adjutant of Corp. C. W. Deming Post, 476 (which was named for his brother), and was by occupation a farmer. (Some confusion exists as to whether his name was "Derning" or "Deming.")
