news178/ Phillies in sight of signing Depo? [08.01.04]sun.[5:23am]
We would like to report that the Phillies lead by Osgood are interested in signing 28-year-old Jeff Depo of the Mariners. Phillies payroll is full 235m no money left. Depo is making 17m this year. Phillies can opt to lower other players salaries which would be ok with them to get the 7 time all-star and 6 time gold glove winner to come play with the Phreakin' Phils. The only problem is Tim Stewart and Jeff Depo both play LF and Stewart is said to be pretty angry about being ask if he'd move to a different position when a news media asked him the question. Stewart will only play LF and no other spot, unless it's DH and NL does not support that position. CF it locked in with Brock and RF has Raydogg so you may think there is no room for Jeff, well Depo said in an interview a half hour ago that he would be willing to play 2B. He hasn't played their since high school but is willing to give it another shot. Jeff has been on the Mets from 1996-1999. He was once part of the 3 player partners back in the 90s. Jeff Depo, Peter Brock, and Jesse Martin were all Met stars from '96-'99 and said that where one goes they all go. Brock decided he wanted out of New York and headed west to Seattle, where Depo and Martin followed. Then from 1999-2002 they all played together intil Brock got a little fed up that the Mariners 77-25 in the '01-'02 got swept in the ALCS vs. the Yankees and wanted to go to a play where they have a world series chance. Brock has played in 6 world series in his 10 season career. 5 with the Mets and 1 with the Phillies. So Brock broke the 3 man chain when he left the Mariners. Depo is said he kinda wants to go back to the Mets where his career started but the players are a little too young for him as he thinks he would have to be the leader of the team and he does not want to ever be the 'leader' of any ball club. So Depo has kept his eyes open. He has played in 5 world series all with the Mets. 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998. Jeff Depo would be more tha happy to play 2B in Phily but the other problem is, how will he get the everyday playing time? Look at the already full line-up.
  • LF- Stewart
  • C - Osgood
  • P- Bernard
  • CF - Brock
  • RF - Raydogg
  • 3B- Avez
  • 1B - Parnell
  • X 2B - MacNer
  • X SS - Cruz

You could put Parnell on the field but not hit. He has been slumping. I don't know folks. You could always trade the dangerous thug that's in jail Tim Stewart. He won't miss any playing time from being in jail but most say he brings a bad reputation to Philly. And by ditching T-Stew you'll have a new LF with a little more speed than Stewart, a little better bunter but when it comes to power, T-Stew outmatches him by an undisclosed amount. T-Stew is too valuable.
