Some individual in literature believe that the established law is above everything, and following it is the only right thing to do.  They even sacrifice their loved ones or family members to do what's supposed to be right.  But in consequence they suffer deeply from the seemingly righteous action.  In the play Antigone there were two characters who sacrificed themselves to do what was right: Antigone and Haimon.

In the beginning of the play, Antigone's two brothers were killed in the line of battle.  One was buried with  honor and the other was not buried but left to be eaten by vulture and other animals.  He was left unburied because he was fighting for the opposing side.  To make sure that no one buried him the King, Creon, stated that if anyone was to bury him they would be killed.  Antigone knew of this rule but felt that she must bury her brother regardless of the consequences.  Do to her actions and standing up for what she believed in, she was sent away to die leaving her sister behind, the only member of the family that was still alive.

The death of Antigone was hard on Haimon, the son of Creon, because that was the love of his life.  He begged his father not to kill her but Creon felt that he had to go by his word.  Creon had no problem doing this for the simple fact that he resented Antigone's father, Oedipus, and felt she was just like him.  So as a result of Antigone being killed, Haimon felt that he should take his own live.  By him doing so he could be with Antigone for eternity.  By him doing so he left behind his father, for what he felt was right.
