The person that I consider to have
had a major influence on me is my mother. My mother has had a major
influence in my life in many ways. She had two children at a young
age and still managed to complete college, have a good paying job, and
her own house.
My mother came to New York from the
Dominican Republic at the age of nine, and immediately started school.
Five years later she had her first child but that didn't slow her down
one bit. She continued to go to school and got a part time job, so
that she could support her child, her mother , who couldn't speak much
english, and herself. Two years later she had another child and was
on her way to complete college.
Even with all of this pressure she
continued her education and attended Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn.
She completed college with flying colors. Then began to work for
the Assemblyman Clarence Norman Jr. Because she was a very dedicated
worker she was recommended by her boss, the Assemblyman, to work for the
Comptroller Alan Hevesi. She began working there and after two years
got a promotion to be the Director of the Citizen Action Center.
My mother has had a great influence on me because she as accomplished a great deal in a short time. She had to take on many responsibilities at a young age and in the end she conquered them all. Even though she had a few struggles and obstacles in her life she always ended up on top. That is way I feel I have to make her proud by defeating my challenges head on and ending up on top.
