A crucial component of any complete treatment program is an effective job training program. Obtaining skills in order to find well-paying jobs is an important part of "creating taxpayers".

To this end, PYHIT owns two fully-functioning hotels. Here, students experience a standard classroom curriculum in conjunction with valuable on-the-job training in either the kitchen, behind the front desk, or in housekeeping. Culinary arts and hospitality training are available at both hotels.

The Schuyler Inn is a 120 room hotel just outside Albany in the town of Menands. Used as a combination commercial hotel and nonprofit training and transitional housing facility, the Schuyler offers students real-world banquet facilities, classrooms, and structured support. Training lasts from six to 12 months. Due to the numerous job openings in hospitality and culinary arts, graduating students enjoy an almost guaranteed placement rate by the Job Placement staff.

LeMoyne Manor, situated at 629 Old Liverpool Road outside of Syracuse, was purchased in December 1998. It was modeled after the Schuyler Inn, and now successfully runs classes in the culinary arts and hospitality. Overlooking Lake Onondaga, it also continues to run as a commercial banquet facility and 65 room motel. Approximately 60 students can be enrolled at any one time.

Students desiring retail experience can choose to work at North Pearl Express, a convenience store run by Altamont Program. The store is located at 260 North Pearl Street in the Ida Yarborough apartment complex, where Altamont also leases apartments as part of its housing program. The store is open 7 days a week, and shows students how to order goods, budget, interact with customers, and other skills that store owners and workers require.

PYHIT's computer classes are becoming more and more popular. Students taking classes at the Computer Training Center at 347 South Pearl Street (across the street from the Eleanor Young Clinic) are exposed to a wide range of applications, from word processing to spreadsheets to operating systems to the Internet.

Classes are held twice a day for the convenience of the students. Job placement for graduates is, not surprisingly, high.

More informal computer training is also held at the Adult Literacy class in the Eleanor Young Clinic. See the Education web page for more information.

The Capitol Hill Deli provides on the job training for sous chefs, customer service, marketing, and how to run a business. A new cafeteria opened in Brooklyn in late 2004 to provide this type of training in the City. It is located at the New York State office building at 55 Hanson Place.

Partnership with the NYS Industries for the Disabled

Altamont Program has partnered with the New York State Industries for the Disabled (NYSID) to provide jobs for people with disabilities. Agencies who would like to support those with disabilities contact NYSID, which then matches up the agency's needs with a partner who provides the labor.

Partnering agencies must be nonprofit, pay wages of at least the minimum required for that particular job, and supply at least 75% disabled labor for each contract. People must qualify as disabled by the NYS Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID). Since Altamont Program has many graduating students each month from its vocational training program, it is able to refer workers to contracting agencies in order to meet the disabled workforce ratio quota.

Most of Altamont Program's labor for each contract is close to 100% disabled. The program has provided many disabled people with valuable job skills in a closely supervised and supportive environment at competitive wages. Most jobs are for janitorial services, but some are for office and administrative work as well.

During 2007, Altamont Program employed an average of 35 people per week for these contracts alone!

Some of the agencies Altamont Program currently has contracts with include:

  • New York State Workers Compensation Board
  • New York State Office of General Services
  • New York State Department of Labor
  • New York State Department of Transportation
  • New York State Museum
  • New York State Lottery
  • New York State Comptrollers Office
  • Capital District Psychiatric Center
  • New York State Justice Department
  • New York State Thruway Authority
  • New York State Department of Motor Vehicles
  • Capital District Off-Track Betting
  • Amedore Homes
  • Action Window
  • Capital District Transportation Authority
  • Corinth DDSO
  • Capital District DDSO
  • Janitronics
  • Rayben

Security Contract

Starting in 2007, the Altamont Program created a new entity to provide security for the Peter Young Shelter in Brooklyn. This created 25 new jobs for the company and allows us greater flexibility in providing a safe and beneficial environment for the residents.
