Our Mission - Creating Taxpayers"Rehabilitate, don't incarcerate!" is the longtime slogan of Father Peter Young, a Catholic priest who has spent almost 50 years working with men and women struggling to stay out of prison and free themselves from addiction. His conviction is simple: despite millions spent on building and maintaining prisons, jails don't work; recovery and rehabilitation do.
In 1959, Father Young founded Peter Young Housing, Industries & Treatment. In the decades to follow, he and scores of supporters have helped liberate thousands of people who were enslaved to their addictions. PYHIT has grown to five non-profit agencies with over 80 divisions offering programs of recovery to anyone who wants a second chance at building a new life. Working out of the Albany NY area, Father Young has achieved these results by means of his "glidepath" philosophy. The "glidepath" has three components: recovery, housing, and jobs. Joined seamlessly together, these offer addicted men and women a fighting chance to become healthy, employed, tax-paying citizens with careers, families, friendships, and futures. What is "glidepath"? Too often, those suffering from addictions have problems that go beyond physical dependencies. They often do not have jobs or shelter. Without these basic living needs, treatment often fails. A pilot who lands his plane on an aircraft carrier follows a glidepath which includes critical direction from the support team. PYHIT is that glidepath for the addicted. It provides clients with comfortable housing, a place that they can take pride in. Training them with valuable job skills in one of PYHIT's own industries like the Schuyler Inn and LeMoyne Manor. And the alcoholism and substance abuse services as well as medical attention and support they need to fully treat their dependencies through Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse certified programs. Peter Young Housing, Industries and Treatment (PYHIT) is one of the most respected programs serving those with addictions. T.H.E. Program
Since the early 1960s, this recovery concept has been known as T.H.E. Program and has a success rate of 92%. More than 9 out of 10 people entering this program return to productive lives as taxpayers.
Father Young has championed the concept of "Wounded Healers". A person who has experienced addiction and successfully overcame it to become an active, stable member of society is better qualified to help those who are themselves struggling with recovery. The "Wounded Healer" concept is carried out throughout the organization. The primary concern is recovery. Without sobriety a person cannot function to the fullest potential nor make sound decisions to cope with stress and demands to our global society. Does this approach work? The numbers show that it does. A study done several years ago found that without treatment, 69% of offenders are reincarcerated once they leave prison. Treatment alone results in a 47% reincarceration rate. But with treatment, training, and housing, the reincarceration rate falls to only 8%. This represents one of the highest success rates in the country.
