AIDS EducationThe AIDS epidemic that is sweeping the globe makes headlines every day. PYHIT is part of a multi-agency initiative sponsored by the New York State Department of Health Aids Institute. A case manager coordinates HIV/AIDS case management services to program participants. There are three AIDS programs currently operating under the Altamont Program that educate our clients and others in the community about the virus and how to treat it or prevent it.
HIV Peer Education and Outreach - targets criminal justice clients in selected county and New York State correctional facilities and parolees in the community, activities focus on AIDS overview, general risk reduction, and advanced risk reduction; funded by the AIDS Institute under its criminal justice initiative HIV Training - federal funding through the AIDS Institute focuses on training inmates to become trainers themselves to spread the word about the virus; the program targets selected New York State correctional facilities HIV Intervention, Prevention, and Continuity of Care Project - demonstration program that targets young offenders under the age of 21 in the Office of Children and Family Services Group Homes and the Coxsackie Correctional Facility
Altamont AIDS Program HIV Welfare to Work InitiativeIn addition to Aids Education, Altamont Program has partnered with the NYS Department of Labor to help HIV-positive clients leave welfare behind and obtain a competitive job. The HIV Welfare To Work Initiative provides the following services: - provide services needed to connect participants with paid employment - provide persons with HIV the assistance needed to ensure continued access to medical care and support services - match participants with available job openings - provide work settings that ensure that the demands of the job do not negatively impact the health of the recipient - provide assistance to individuals living with HIV in understanding issues concerning disclosure and confidentiality - provide participants with post-employment support for job retention To be eligible, a claimant must be diagnosed as having the HIV/AIDS disease and be a recipient of Family Assistance or Safety Net benefits, or have a household income of below 200% of poverty level. There is no cost to employers for Altamont's services. Altamont's involvement does not end once the person is employed. Altamont staff will continue to monitor employees for 180 days to evaluate job behaviors. Once a month, a performance review will be conducted. Please call (518) 465-8034 for more information or schedule an assessment. All calls are confidential.
