POEM
I live in a place called Corona, Queens.
It is an exciting and unique area.
Everyone that I know is from a different country.
Such a vast difference between people.
Yet, we communicate and harmonize as a whole.
This is what stands out from my neighborhood.
We oversee our differences and live together.
Unlike many other neighborhoods, we don't
focus on color but on the real you.
It may sound strange, but such a place can
exist.
There are Hispanics, Whites, African Americans,
Chinese, Hindus, etc....
When I go into the wide variety of stores,
almost every store is owned by someone of a different race.
The unique thing is that they all treat me
the same and don't view me as an outsider.
When I walk in the streets no one gives you
a bad look, unless you deserve it.
When you visit my neighborhood automatically
you will see and feel a difference.
You will feel at home and welcomed without
ever being denied so.
Everyone will tell you that we are all a part
of a community.
A community which cares and listens without
judging.
I moved here five years ago.
The first time I came I felt different.
I didn't see any fighting and I wasn't discriminated.
For the first time in my life I felt accepted
for who I really was.
No one made any assumptions and remarks.
Now me and my family live peacefully and calm.
I just hope that in the next decade my neighborhood
doesn't take a turn for the worse but for the best.
