Win with "WINAMP'S MY PLAY LOCKER"...a FREE online MPEG storage service! "MY PLAY" is the answer to an overcrowded hard drive. For those of us with smaller hard drives cluttered with MPEG's in a desperate act of "Download Fever", a solution has come at last. Napster may be gasping for it's last dying breath, but help is on the way for those of us perplexed with MPEG file storage. No longer will we have to desperately hope for that CD Burner for our next birthday present from wealthy family members. No longer will we have to wait impatiently for our lucky "LOTTO", or Irish Sweepstakes numbers to come in. No longer shall we wear out the knees in our jeans, prostrating ourselves in prayer, to an uncaring deity. Finally a workable alternative to burdgeoning hard drives! The Internet, despite public relations nightmares as of late, shows it's promise, and potential in recent months, with unique solutions to the file storage woes of millions of subscribers. Though newer PC's and MACS come equipped with Hard Drives as large as 60-80 GBs, most of us are still stuck in the world of 10 GBs, or less. On the 'Net, storage sites such as "X-DRIVE" & "DRIVEWAY" have allowed subscribers to upload MB's of pesky files for use on Web Pages and storage. Usually these sites allow for less than a Gig in storage which is fine for photo and text files, but hardly helpful with those giant MPEG's we are so fond of. Enter "MY PLAY". With a storage cache of 3 Gigs, one can save those fan faves, and give your over-worked Win-Tel a well-deserved break! On the down side, uploading to "MY PLAY" is a slow process. Even with a DSL, you may want to bring a book, or start your laundry. The lack of an FTP protocol also creates a problem, reminding the user of those old 56k days. I also had some problems initially with my default media player. The application promised to configure my player for me. It accessed the Window Media Player and would not allow me to use my REAL PLAYER, which I favor. However, after a little fiddle-de-dee, and a little more fiddle-de-doo, I managed to get hooked in and on. Incidently, I discovered I could have avoided all the confusion by signing up for "WINAMP", a companion service product accessible at the bottom of the "MY PLAY" home page. After hooking up with "WINAMP" all my problems were solved, and I had found a far superior Media Player! I have uploaded most of my MPEGs into "WINAMP'S MY PLAY LOCKER", and restored order to my hard drive. Now whenever my little heart desires, I can click on my "WINAMP BROWSER" and listen to my favorite tunes, in any order, or mix, I choose. In addition to storage, the LOCKER serves as a comprehensive search engine, and allows for multiple search & sort options. The "WINAMP BROWSER" allows for personal preferences and comes with it's own equalizer! Incidently, the media player works online and my REAL Player takes over when off the net! For new users, I suggest editing your performer's names "last name first". This will make file sorting dramatically easier. Also logging a file's selection number before the title may be useful. Don't worry if you've entered your data incorrectly, "WIN AMP" allows for follow-up editing of data logs. "WINAMP" may be accessed at: http://www.winamp.com "MY PLAY" is located at: http://www.myplay.com My recommendations are based upon my experience with WINDOWS '98, 6 GBs of hard drive, and a DSL connection. I am dubious of the service's ability to administrate with a lesser profile, but the promise is there, and with a little fine-tuning, this product will get my highest rating.
