Issue 25 St. Columba/St. Denis/Blessed Kateri Conference September 2004

Knowing, loving and serving God by knowing, loving and serving your neighbor.

Dear Members,
I hope everyone has had a good summer. We are currently distributing the school supplies to all our clients' children. It is important that each member pick up the school supplies needed by their families before school begins. The remainder will be offered to less-fortunate children at St. Denis/St. Columba School, Fishkill Plains and Gayhead Schools.

During the summer months we serviced the following number of clients:
June 2004 47 Households; 77 children; 76 adults and 14 seniors.
July 2004 48 Households; 67 children; 76 adults and 17 seniors.

Also over the summer we have moved the new wire racks 90 degrees to makeboth sides accessible and to make room for a pasta cabinet again. We purchased a welded steel cabinet for the hallway from Grainger Inc. with the IBM grant.

Since New York State has approved our application for additional wire racks, we will change the wooden shelves for wire racks on the east wall of the closet in September or October. The new shelves will be 24" deep, 72" high and 144" long. Once the new shelves are in place, we will rearrange the inventory to make your shopping trip in the closet more efficient. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

The SVDP telephone has been moved into the closet without changing our hotline telephone number.

In our next newsletter, I will discuss what is new in low-cost health
care and where to receive free advice on money management.

Lastly, it is with deep sadness that I report the passing of our good
friend and member Rocco Oliveri. Rocky was always there to help the Society and to smooth the way for any project. He will be missed.

We are in need of a volunteer take responsibility for our fresh egg supply.
Our next meeting is September 8, 2004

Sincerely,

Carole Grafer,
President

Minutes of June 9, 2004 meeting.
St. Vincent de Paul Society

Our meeting started at 7:10 PM.  Carole read from Matthew, chapter 25, verses 34-40.  The minutes were read and accepted.

In attendance were; Kay Coyle, Joanne and Chuck Bunnell, Bill and Carole Grafer, Betty Riggio, Diana Villalta, Jack Kiley and myself.  Joining us was Pat Wunder and Barbara Yannaco.

Carole reported on May's HPNAP report.  We served 57 households, of which there were 104 children, 99 adults, and 16 elderly.

Joanne and Carole attended Shop Rite's Partners in Caring breakfast, where they received a thousand dollar check to be used at our regional food bank.  Carol explained our on going plight for sliced bread.  The store manager was happy to accommodate us.  He has offered to supply us with a variety of bread items once a week.  Joanne picked up our first donation; a shopping cart full of sliced bread, rolls, and pies.
Carole received another surprise at the breakfast.  She met Alicia Brown, a member of the Community Action Partnership, who assists clients with collecting benefits and filling out forms.  Ms. Brown will become our new advocate for SVDP at the Community Action Partnership.

The following items were discussed.
There was a trip to the regional food bank on June 2.  We spent $1988 on 3,500 pounds of food, which was mostly meat.
Sons of Italy donated eight cases of hamburger patties to us.
The magnet project at St. Columba had a very low response.  We need to remind the parishioners of the importance of the magnet.

Also, Deacon Dominick Casadone of Sacred Heart invited the Society to a Day of Recollection in late August or late September -- we helped with their SVDP formation quite some time ago.

A notice for the Back to School Supplies will be in the church bulletins, the weekend of July 10 and 11.
We will have the school supplies ready to go in the month of August, when most of the school lists have been mailed home.
We have $46.11 balance from OSP.  Carole will purchase a safety stepladder for the food pantry.
Chuck did some research for telephone options.  We will pay approximately $30 a month.  The installation of the phone turn out to be costly and Msgr. suggested that the church would pay for it.  However, Carole feels that if SVDP has enough money to pay the bill, we will.

Next, Pat Wunder spoke on behalf of the newly appointed Health Ministry.  The kick off event will take place on a weekend in September, with nurses taking free blood pressures after the masses.  They will try to have ready a questionnaire for each participant to fill out at that time.
They will not only assist church members, but SVDP clients as well.
Basically, the group of nurses are willing to give advice and guidance, drive clients to and from appointments when needed, help with medications, instruct the clients or family members on how to give injections, and help with filling out health forms.
Pat believed that the Healthy Ministry should help others “mentally, physically and spiritually.”
We will hear more from the group come September.

Our next meeting, after a 2 month break, will be September 8.  A newsletter will come out the end of August.
The meeting closed at 7:35 PM and a prayer was said for Theresa Macur.
