Issue 37 St. Columba/St. Denis/Blessed Kateri Conference September 2007

Knowing, loving and serving God by knowing, loving and serving your neighbor.

Good Morning.  I hope everyone has had a pleasant summer.  As we prepare for the 2007-08 season, we have to address the problem of the closet inventory.  With the increased number of clients, it has become harder and harder to keep the closet filled.  Obviously, we all want to do the very best for our client families, but we have to remember that another member is coming in right after us to service their clients.  Please help share the food resources equably.  We will discuss this issue further at our meeting.

Lou and Roseann Malagrino, SVDP Members here and in Florida, work very hard in both locations doing many different jobs.  I asked Roseann to write the article below to explain how  "My Brother's Keeper" food pantry operates in Florida:

My Brother's Keeper - Florida
A ministry to care for people experiencing difficulties in life.

Parishioners bring food to church one Sunday a month.  Other sources of food come from donated money and a central warehouse where supermarkets donate their dented, damaged and overstocked goods.  This is our largest supplier.  Each Monday we are given 24 to 48 banana boxes of food.  Although, we never know what we will get, this donation is a Godsend.  Once a month we get government food.  Recently, Panera's restaurant donates bread once a week.

Our major clients are migrant workers of Hispanic descent.  Families average 50 to 150 per week with the average family size being a family of 4.  In one week, we can feed up to 600 people.  No one is turned away but we do have requirements for our patrons:  all must have a valid ID and each client is allowed to return 13 times per calendar year.

On Monday morning, we pick up food and stock the shelves.  The building is open on Wednesday evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Friday morning from 10:00 AM to Noon.  We have a bilingual person who checks in the clients, a person that makes sure that id's are in order and 3 other people who fill the orders.  Any extra helpers fill rice and beans in baggies.  All workers help to empty the truck, stock the shelves, pick up donations from the church and keep the building clean.

My Brother's Keeper prepares bags of food for those in need.  A typical food issue for a family of four is:

2 pounds of rice                       2 pounds of dry beans
4 cans of soup                         2 cans of fruit
4 cans of green vegetables         2 cans of tomatoes
1 pound of pasta                       box of cereal
1 pound of coffee                     juice
bread/cake                              milk / Parmalat

Extras such as candy, cracker, paper towels, toilet paper and meat are given when available.

Roseann, thank you so much for such an informative article.  Also, thanks to Roseann and to Lou for putting our school supplies in order.

Lastly, I hope all will come to our meeting on September 12 at 7 PM in St. Columba Convent Meeting Room.  We need YOUR input.

IMPORTANT BREAKING NEWS:  The closet will be closed the evening of September 17 (Monday) and all day September 18 (Tuesday) so that the hall and closet floor can be painted.  Please schedule around these days.

Sincerely,

Carole Grafer, President

Minutes
June 13, 2007

Carole opened the meeting at 7:09 pm with a reading from Matthew chapter 7 verses 7-13.

The minutes were read by Barbara Yannaco, accepted by Linda Hunt, and seconded by John Lucid.

In attendance were: Betty  Riggio, Bucky and Laura Ryan, Nick Dono, Anne Nardelli, Kay Coyle, Ed Ryan, John Lucid, Linda Hunt, Jack Kiely, Nancy Guarino, Julie Kantor, Bill and Carole Grafer. Joanne and Chuck Bunnell, and Barbara Yannaco.

Our HPNAP report for May 2007: we served 64 households which included 106 children, 115 adults, and 24 elderly. This represents an increase of 25% over May 2006.

We received a very nice thank you note from Kathy Jones for the Easter baskets that we sent to Good Counsel.

We would like to thank Kathy and Dave Palmer for the beautiful banner that they donated to us. We used it for the first time at the health fair. We would also like to thank Kathy and her fellow employees at Healy Brothers for their generous donation to our society.

At the Health Fair Dr. Prus  DDS donated toothbrushes to our closet. We also collected $18.00 from people who attended the fair. Thank you to all for your generosity.

Julie Kantor has joined our organization and will be bringing the donated food from Blessed Kateri to the food closet. Thank you Julie.

Nick, Bucky, Ed , and Chuck went to the food bank on June 6th and returned with 2,862 pounds of food. They spent $1,897.34. Carole, Kay, Betty ,and Roseann and Lou Maligrino were on hand to put this away.

Over the summer we will spend some time checking expiration dates on items in the food closet. We will start with the soup as that seems to be the biggest problem at the moment. These cans can be on the shelf for 2 years after the date that is stamped on them.

Nick has about 100 milk coupons to be used over the summer.

Carole will be placing an order for SVDP shirts and for certificates of appreciation.

Linda and her committee will be meeting to discuss ways that we can get more people involved in helping to  provide the holiday baskets.

If anyone has GOOD USEABLE winter coats for adults we will have room for a limited number of them in the food closet. We will hang these in the closet during October and November.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Gary Bartilucci and his staff for all of the help that they give us during the year. We appreciate all that you do for us. It makes our job that much easier. Thank You.

Our next meeting will be on Sept.12th.

Carole closed the meeting at 8:02 with a prayer. A short social was held after the meeting and was enjoyed by all.

Our meetings are open to all and we welcome new members. We meet in St. Columba CONVENT MEETING ROOM.

LINDA'S CORNER

The Back to School drive went very well.  We received many school supplies, backpacks and lunch boxes.  Now it is almost time for Holiday baskets.  The Thanksgiving baskets will be given out on November 18 immediately following the blessing at 1:30 pm.  Drop off will still be from 10 AM to Noon.  The Christmas baskets will be given out on December 16.  It is earlier than normal but since Christmas is on a Tuesday it should make it easier for both clients and members.  VERY IMPORTANT:  All members must give me current information on their clients.  I also need a list of items wanted for Christmas.  I will not be at the first meeting as I will be visiting my Mom but please get the information to me soon.

I am answering more and more calls from people in need.  If anyone would like another client, please get in touch with me.  I would appreciate the help before the situation becomes a problem.   I hope you had a great summer and look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you.

Linda Hunt
