Essay on the Motif of Blindness Vs. Vision in "Oedipus Rex"

In the world, we have people who are blind, but can see the true light, better than those people who have the advantage of seeing. They are able to see the truth, but the people who can see, can't see for anything about the truth. But its that no matter how many hints and clues are in our faces, many people still refuse to say its true.

In Oedipus Rex, Oedipus refuses to face that truth that he did kill has father and marry his mother, as what Teiresias told him. Oedipus tells Teiresias that he is a, "sightless, witless, senseless mad old man!" but Teiresias answers back"....you with both your eyes, are blind, you can not see the wretchedness of your life," " you don't  know the blind wrongs that you have done then..."

Teiresias sayings also prove that the blind, people could see better than the people that do believe in miracles. Throughout this section, Oedipus starts to see the truth, and blinding himself after finding the truth. He is left with the image of his dead wife/mother, that will stay with him on the rest of his life.

  • Malediction: a curse. ex: the Oracle put a curse against Oedipus.

  • Blasphemy: to speak of or address. ex: Iocaste continously put down the gods, not believing in their Oracles.
