I choose
the movie Norma Rae because it relates to the Jungle. The things that relate
are the working under poor conditions, the long hours for little pay and
personal problems. The work ethic was the same for both the movie and the
book the both beilieve in hard work and dedication. Norma Rae as an individual
was a very strong person to go against the higher power. The desicion whether
or not to have a union was the main subject. It took a lot to explain and
break down everything the union was about.
The union it self "that possess the economic power to threaten continued
production of goods or services and that actually have the political right
to exercise such power have helped to raise the living standards of both
their members and others". It depends on how well you explain your self
whether or not the employer will grant union demands.
Norma Rae is a southern textile worker who works in a factory with bad
working conditions. This concern about the situation gives her the reason
to be the key associate to a visiting labor union organizer. Together,
they take on the difficult risk and possibly dangerous, struggle to unionize
her factory.
Norma Rae is a dependable widow and single mother in Alabama. Like her
father, her mother and most of her friends, she works at the" Henley mill,
spinning and weaving cloth" . Her nothing special" life changes when she
and her coworkers meet Reuben, a dedicated, smart-mouthed labor organizer
down from New York to teach the Henley crew about "solidarity" in a place
where workers and owners alike think "union" and "trouble" go hand and
hand.
The reaseach I choose was sweatshop I feel it will be interesting to see the outcome.
A sweatshop is a small manufacturing establishent in which employees work
long hours under substandard conditions for low wages. Sweatshops what
use to be called the sweater was meant to reduce high prices in wages
and at the same time produce or increase production of products. Sweat
shops use to be residential but now they are small factories. Sweatshop
was mostly women and children employees. Sweatshops are restricted and
against the law mainly because of the low wages and poor working conditions.
Most of the people are immigrants who are here illegally andare deperate
for money and the sweat shop owners take advantage.
"The sweatshop system expanded as women and children entered the workforce.
In the 1890s sweatshop were the mainstray of the garment industry. Many
children were disfigured or killed while working these sometimes dangerous
jobs. Lewis Hinoun american photographer who pioneered social documentry
photographed this child tending a loon in a north carolina cotton mill".
Immigrants come here from other places or countries and they are not legal
so they do anything they can to get money no matter how bad it is. Just
because they don't belong here it doesn't mean they should suffer in that
way because there still human beings.
Companies that use sweatshops. Companies use sweatshops labor to increase
their own profit margins. Women are paid as little as six cents an hour
and work ten to twelve hour shifts and sometimes over time is mandatory.
Women are allowed only two drinks of water and one bathroom break per shift.
Employers use sexual harassment, corporal punishment, and verabal abuse
to keep employees in fear. Companies should not be allowed to increase
their profit margins by using hard working women. The women deserve to
be paid a living wage to be given a safe working environment.
Where sweatshops are and who uses them. Swaetshops are run in places called
apparel centers, these places are in California, New York, Dallas, Miami
and Atlanta. Guess in one of the worst offenders was suspended from department
of labor list og good guys.
Many things have been done to try and end the operation of sweatshop. One
thing that has been done is a march to end sweatshop it was called a march
for justice. “In 1911 a fire at the triangle shirtwaist company killed
146 garment workers in NYC. When this happen the support from people led
to new rights for workers and safer workplaces in America. The struggle
for social justice has advanced.
Even through the advancement history repeats itself. “ In 1993 a fire at
the kadar Industrial Toy Company in Thailand killed 188 workers who like
the victims in 1911 faced locked doors and no fire protection equipment.”
Any place that has hazardous working conditions, arbitrary discipline and
a lack of a living wage, benefits, dignity or basic human rights should
not be a work place.

My Journal,
My name is Jurgis Rudkus I am an immigrant from Lithuanian who came to
the United States to make a life for my family. This letter is to assess
the situation of whether or not the family would be better off returning
to the old country or not. In a way I feel they should all stay here and
struggle so they could appreciate things in life more but, another side
of me says to letter them return to the old country and I’ll just stay
here and send the money I make back to them to the old country so they
don’t have to struggle so hard. Being that I am an immigrant and should
not be here anyway the struggle is harder.
PS. I don’t know what to do!
Sincerely yours,
Jurgis Rudkus
