The Beginnig of Time (Genesis 2:15) |
The Biblical Thought: Work was a job that was that came about when
sin entered the world and the human had to pay since they had to ejected
the garden. This was consider a curse by God to punish the disobedience
and ingratitude of Adam and eve towards god by disobeying his forms of
law. |
The Way of The Greek World 500bc-until-117ad |
The Greeks were similar to the Hebrews, because they consider work
as a curse to the people. The word work for the Greeks was define
as Ponos described from poena, meaning sorrow. The manual labor was
only for those who were salves. For the Greeks the Mental Labor was
consider as a deplore because it was a brutalizing of the mind by forcing
it to work when it was not made for this. To be used in such form. |
Even though work was needed to satisfy the need for
the satisfaction of material needs. Plato one of the most famous philosophers
and his assistant Aristotle made it clear that the purpose was for
the majority to work and for the minority to to engage in pure exercises
of the mind, such as art, philosophy, and politics. Even though that
Plato recognized the division of labor by class of categories like poor
and the rich, then divided by another category such as of the different
kinds of work. Even thoguh they did wish for people to do have the
wish of owning their own private property and having hte wish of
wealth.
The Way The Romans Thought 400ad - 1400ad |
Roamns had mostly adopted their norms from the culture of the Greeks,
because they also consider that the manual job was something digrating
for the people to do. The Romans did incourage the competence
in organization, administration, building, and warefare. |
The Romans empire had spread throught out most of
Europe, the middle East. Egypt, and North Africa. It also then came
about to influence most of our culture
What Slaves Were For Romans |
Roman most likely utilized slaves. Moderate number of Slaves
were held and they were treated relatively well. Thousands of slaves
were required for a large-scale grain production on some estates.
Then the treatment was worse. slaves were then viewd a cattle,
evn sometimes worse because they believed cattles were not capable of caring
for themselves as the slaves were. Even though that slaves tried
their best to have their hope alive to one day be freed. |
For the Roman the work was to be done only by the
Slaves, only two jobs were made only for th efree man which was agriculture
and big business. A man that was only his job to be used by arms
was a dishonoring and vulgar job for a Roman citizen. The ones that
were not privileged to be wealthy and were obliged to work along the side
of the slaves, they were not treated with gratitude. for all these
cultures, Hebrew, greek, and roman work was a punishment by god for the
man's original sin, but a positve aspect for earning, instead of
getting charity from others as an excuse for physical needs of life.
Wealth was recognized as an opportunity but also a a form of materialism
to share with others that were less fortunate.
The Christian Church Tries to Rule |
The wealthy were expected to meet their own needs, to excess of their
riches to charity. |
-
A hierarchy of profession was then built in a form that
the way of the church was the highest and the most.
-
That work was part of the economic structure.
-
An example of the Hierarchy of Professions was 1) Agriculture 2) Handicrafts
and 3) Commerce.
Types of Occupations that were acceptable and unacceptable
1820-1880
|
Because of the church being the highest category, the ideal occupation
acceptable was the monastic life of prayer and contemplation of God.
But a Cleric was consider a a wordly occupation |
-
Reformation the period of religous and political upheaval in western Europ.
-
People could serve God through out work, this was the universal base of
society and the cause may had differ by social classes.
-
A person should not change the occupation that he was born with.
What is America to them? |
The adventurist of American lands described America as a not for a
place to work and build a new land, but for a new Eden where abundance
and riches. |
-
In america came no hopes or illusions of a life of ease.
-
The task to built a new world in the wilderness as an opportunity to prove
their own moral worth.
What was impressional of the Amrican? |
The visitors consider the American lands as a industrious pace.
They often complained about the lack of opportunities for amusement. |
-
Work was not preindustrial America was not a incessant.
Economist warned of the poverty and decay that the befall of the people
failed to work hard, and the moralist stressed the social duty of each
person to be productive.
Had Factories change forms of occupation?1880-1920 |
Factories were then built in other towns as a competition in the industry
grew. The cotton Mills were distinguished from other factories of
the day by the size they were built, their discipline demanded of their
workers. Regulations are imposed on employees. |
-
The cotton mills spread to other industries, the home and workshop trades
were essentially replaced by the mass production. Then the handcraft
projects were then replaced as a high valuable occupation.
What did the factories change? |
During this time production had been a virtue, and excess goods were
not a problem. Now in our days factories could produce more
thanwhat their own country could use, hard work and production no longer
always provide assurance of prosperity. the industrial system continue
to try to dominate work and at the same time technology continue to advance. |
The Information Age 1980-1990 |
Because more jobs became more technical and higher level of thinking
on the job as a machine were interfaced by the use of computers and control
systems as a more complex system.
|
What changes were made? |
Information age jobs provided opportunities for greater self
expression by workers, the workes started to find more self-fulfillment
in their work. Stop to what the history was of work a painful, sacrificed,
and drudgery thing to do. The time when women had no longer have
the suffrage of not having the employment they wished for. |
Education was very important |
Education was very important and need for many to continue in a better
ocupation field that would provide a better opportunity instead of a work
in a factory. Personal goals were then wanted by many. By setting
an activity to accomplish and achieve. |
Women got to be something known |
Women after the WWII began to enter the work place in great
numbers. During the 1900 made up 18% of the nation's workforce, but
during 1947 the women comprised 28% of the workforce.
1980 42.5% of the nation workers were women . |
As the century and time passed by the culture and revolution changed
alot the work form. Just how it goes on today with technology, at
first we had nothing and now we are a whole world full of new advance.
