My Neighborhood Project (Writing about New York)

Write observational journals (describe objectively what you see, hear, smell, and touch).  Use your sense of memory.  How it does it smel?  What noises can they hear?  Do they have any memories associating taste with the area?  Three observational journalsare required for this project.

Search their neighborhoods for signs of a changing city.  They might arrange to interview people who lived and worked in the neighborhood for a long time.  Consider older neighbors, owners of local businesses, ministers, policemen, firemen, or teachers at your school.  Interview at least one resident who is one of the oriinal residents and has been living in the neighborhood for a long time.  You may interview a family member or your neighbor, even a business owner.

9. Discuss how to prepare interview questions. It is esential that they all have
well-prepared interview questions before conducting the interview. They may
record the interview using a tape recorder or simply by means of note-taking.
Read an example of interview . Pay special attention to the questions raised

your written pieces).

History Three artistic pieces are also required for the project:
      1. Your neighborhood map
      2. The collage of your neighborhood (it could be the illustration of one of
      your written pieces).
Using pictures from magazines, posters, postcards, or photographs they
have taken of the City, students can make a photomontage of New York
City. They can include outstanding structures, interesting architectural
details, landmarks, and street scenes. Images can be cut up and
rearranged in a way that communicates the students' vision of the city.
They can be secured with tape or glue on cardstock or construction
paper. If they want to upload into the website, simply take pictures of
them and scan them into your image file to create a gallery. The student
can down load the art work from the gallery onto their web site.
      3. Two photos of your neighborhood.
      4. You may add any artistic piece of your choice to the project.

After we finish the project, works will be selected to go into the class
anthology and also sent to be published .

Maybe we can even submit our writing to The Society for New York City

The Bakery system of Giangrasso's Bakery

It's 5:00a.m. and the movemnt is heard in the street called Wilson Avenue.  What causes the noise of movemnt is the trucks and voices of men inside and outside the trucks picking up boxes of bread which have to be delievered, the Baker is giving them instructions and telling them the quantity sold.  People living and entering the Bakery is only seen with a fast movement.  The number of boxes cannot be counted because of the great quantity seen.  A scene is impressing when all men look at here clocks and stop for seconds the rushing all to their trucks and destination.  While the Baker cleans up and puts everything away , then goes back upstairs to his home to rest.  While others are awaking to go to work.  When he awakes is to plan for the next morning.

Journal 1
Time 7:00p.m. the weather is 40 degrees, and no cold winds.  The time is the most rush hour because most of the people are returning home.  The Gates of businesses are going down.  Car doors are opening and closing.  Lights are going off and the Hair-stylist is rushing with hair do's to go home.  Mother are telling children what to do before going to cook.  Cars are going on turn from left to right while others are outside in the front of their house to observe the rush passing by.  The smell is of pollution and food from the cars that are brought home from working adults that wish not to cook in that certain day.The smell from hair spray that is put to the old lady that lives the the next building to keep her hair are high as possible, to look younger.  When everyone is resting you smell the flour of the Baker.
