Oedipus Essay Test
There are many people in this world who are
blind, yet they can "see" better than those who have the luxury of vision.
They are better able to tell what truth lies a head, yet we who see will
still not see the truth that lies right in front of us. No matter
how many clues are thrown in our faces, we'll still say it's not true.
In Oedipus Rex, Oedipus refuses to face the truth that he did in fact kill
his father, and married his mother, as Teirisias had told him. Oedipus
tells Teirisias that he is just a " sightless, witless, senseless, mad
old man!". But Teirisias answers back with these important words:
".....you with your eyes, are blind: you can not see the wretchedness of
your life, " ".....you do not even know the blind wrongs you have done....."
Teirisias' words also prove that the blind can see better than most people
would believe.
Throughout this section of the book, Oedipus starts to see the truth and
ironically blinds himself after finding out the harsh truth. He is
now left with the image of his wife/mother Iocaste hanging from her bedroom.
An image that may stay with him until his last day.
Blind vs. Vision. In this story it seems that blindness is truth &
vision is lies. and in order to see the truth, you must physically blind
yourself in order to acknowledge the truth.
