Norma
Rae is a movie in which the dangerous and unhealthy working conditions
factory workers of the South faced were illustrated to promote change.
Norma Rae teams up with a New York union leader to help organize a labor
union at the work place. Together they manage to overcome the obstacles
of management to unionize the factory workers.
Norma Rae was a minimum wage worker in a cotton mill based in the South.
The factory employed her parents as well. The treacherous working
condiotions which deafened her mother motivated Norma to improve the working
conditions of the factory. Once she hears a speech by Reuben, the
New York union organizer, Norma decides to join.
From then on the struggle began for Norma as she defied her boss and put
her job on the line. She manages, however, to create interest among
the workers and the unionization of the shop.
Norma Rae was getting a hard time
from her coworkers and the union because she was being paid to watch the
others at work and tell on them if they were not working productively.
She basically informed the boss and influenced whether an employee was
fired or not.
The movie was interesting and very informative. It depicted life
in the south as well as the hardships that employees experienced at the
job. We saw the hazardous working conditions and the power of the
"boss" over the entire labor force. We also learned of the labor
unions and how they struggled to get their point across.
My favorite part of the movie was when she stood up to her beliefs of the
union by defying her boss and copying the notice on the bulletin board.
She appeared to be very strong in the outside, but I could tell that inside
she was trembling with fear. I did not like the fact, though, that Norma
was posed as somewhat of a sexual object of every males characters' desire
in the movie. It appeared as if every man in the movie wanted to
get with Norma.
