Infectious Disease and the United
States
1. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST!
Instructions:
We have been studying infectious disease. In order
to make our research more current, we will be gathering data on the amount
of deaths occurring in various United States cities due to influenza and
pneumonia.
1. Sign up to research a city in the United States that is listed in the table below.
2. Find current information about the population in the city that you are researching.
3. Look for the amount of people who have died as a result of pneumonia and influenza in the city that you have chosen. This data is collected by the Center for Disease Control.
4. Using the information on the population of the city and the disease statistics, figure out the percentage of the population that has died as a result of pneumonia and influenza.
5. Record your weekly data in a well organized data table.
AT THE END OF THE PROJECT:
6. Create a line graph that represents the data you have recorded in your data table.
7. Meet with the students who have chosen the other city in your region. Compare and contrast your data. Write a conclusion about the similarities and differences between the data that you found in your research. Include in your conclusion:
SELECT A CITY THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO RESEARCH!
| Region | Big City | Small City |
| New England | Boston, MA | Fall River, MA |
| Mid Atlantic | New York City, NY | Erie, PA |
| E.N. Central | Chicago, IL | Fort Wayne, IN |
| W.N. Central | Minneapolis, MN | Duluth, MN |
| S. Atlantic | Miami, FL | Savannah, GA |
| E.S. Central | Memphis, TN | Chattanooga, TN |
| W.S. Central | Dallas, TX | Corpus Christi, TX |
| Mountain | Las Vegas, NV | Ogden, UT |
| Pacific | Los Angeles, CA | Santa Cruz, CA |
|
|
-research recent data on the population of their
city
-create weekly data reports on their city's rate
of deaths due to influenza and pneumonia (total number of deaths and the
percentage of the population that has died as a result of these diseases)
-draw monthly line graphs summarizing the month's
data (total number of deaths)
-write conclusions summarizing the similarities
and differences between the rate of deaths due to influenza and pneumonia
in the various cities that we have studied (based on oral reports and line
graphs by their classmates)
