William Hartnel's Companions

Here are summeries of William Hartnel's companions. I have included pictures of the "lost companions",
or companions who's episodes have all been distroyed, at the bottom of the page.

Susan Forman (Carole Ann Ford)

Susan "Forman" was the Doctor's grandaughter. She was very into "deep thoughts" and "heart to heart chats" which could basicly make you sick. And she had the uncanny nack of getting into any sort of trouble humanly (and I use the term loosely) possible. (Probably a direct result of being related to the Doctor come to think of it...) Also, she had weak ankles which were so prevelent in the Doctor's companions---She was constantly spraining them. I'm sorry to sound so negative, but she simply was not my favorite character. Maybe I'm just jealous or something. Always wanted to be a Time Lord.... Anyway, she was traveling with the Doctor from the begining of his travels. She left to marry David, an earthling, and help him rebuild the earth after the Doctor ridded it of the invading Daleks.
Gosh, I sure was sorry to see her go....

Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright (William Russell & Jacqueline Hill)

Ian and Barbara were two of Susan Forman's teachers at Colehill School, which she attended durring a lengthy stay on Earth. They became suspiciuse of her and followed her "home" one day only to discover that "home" was a beat up old police box which could travel anywhere in time or space.
Ian Cheterton was one of those types that you could leave in the middle of the desert all alone with a role of dental floss and half a match (the wrong half), and come back a year later to find he'd built a thriving civilization, complete with indoor plumbing. He was very athletic and well able to take care of himself. He managed to get the Doctor and Co. out of many dire situations.
Barbara was a history teacher, which came in very handy durring the Doctor's adventures into the past. She had some issues with the concept of not changing past events, especially with the Aztecs, but for the most part handled herself well. Over the course of her travels with the Doctor she managed to do everything from date Emporer Nero to join a Harem (unwillingly, of course....)
Ian and Barbara spent their whole adventure with the Doctor atempting to get back to their own time, having been kidnapped in the first place, and finaly managed it at the end of "The Chase" with the help of a Dalek time machine.

Vicki (Maureen O'Brien)

Vicki was stranded on the planet Dido after the space ship she was traveling on crashed. Her first episode--the name of which has slipped my mind--was really very creepy and was one of the few Doctor Who episodes I found frightning as a child. Vicki was an adventerous, stuborn kid who was always getting into trouble. (Wait. I just discribed all of the Doctor's companions...) She, too, was striken with weak ankles and was, quote, "Not very good on hights" but I liked her. She was spunky and made a refreshing change from Susan's constant panicking and cries of "Grandfather!, Grandfather!" The episode where she left has sadly been lost.

Dodo (Jackie Lane)

Dodo was a school girl picked up by the Doctor in an episode that now exists only in an audio version--The Saint Barthalameu's Day Massacre. (Yes, I know that at least six of those four words are misspelled...) She was strong willed and unwilling to believe in time travel until it was extensively proven to her that it was real. Oh, and a cold virus she was carrying nearly wiped out the human race. (In the episode, The Ark) Dodo was childish and stuborn, but still likeable (at least to me). She was one of the few companions to actually make it back to her own town in the correct decade. She left at the end of The War Machines.

Steven Taylor (Peter Purves)

Steven Taylor was found on a planet run by machines at the end of the episode, The Chase. He came on the show as Barbara and Ian left. Stephen was skeptical of the TARDIS's ability to travel through time, even when thrown into the middle of a Vicking invasion. ("What, do you think it's a space helmet for a cow?") Once he accepted the situation, however he adjusted rapidly and was one of the few companions to actually want to do what the Doctor said--as in, when the Doctor said "Stay here," he would actually want to stay. Dodo or Vicki or some other random, stuborn female would usually drag him away anyway, but his intentions were good, at least. Steven left at the end of The Savages, which has been distroyed.
