This Month, Derek Jeter Speaks Softly and Carries a Big Stick.

Who was the first woman you had a crush on?

Barker's beauties--the women who brought out the prizes on The Price Is Right. I used to watch it in the afternoon before going back to kindergarten.

Did you have a favorite TV show?

When I was 5 or 6 I loved The Incredible Hulk. I used to wear the cut-up shorts and everything.

What did you want to be growing up?

I wanted to play shortstop for the Yankees. I had the team photo up on the wall and everything. When I would say that in class, teachers would tell my dad that maybe I should think about other careers as well. But it's worked out okay.

Did you have any heroes?

I had a poster of Dave Winfield on my wall. My dad was my biggest hero, but they haven't made a poster of him yet.

What was the first concert you ever went to?

I went with two of my aunts to the Meadowlands in New Jersy to see the Michael Jackson Victory Tour in the mid- '80s. I had plenty of people who could've taken me. My mom's got 13 brothers and sisters.

What was your first car and what happened to it?

In 1990, my dad gave me his gray '81 Datsun 310. The passenger-door handle didn't work, so on dates I'd have to get in, open it from the inside, then jump out of the car and swing around to close it for my date.

Were your parents strict?

No, but they enforced the rules. I had an 11 o'clock curfew, and I never missed it once.

Playboy or Penthouse?

Neither. I probably would've gotten in trouble for that if I got caught.

What's the best advice your father gave you?

Don't let anyone outwork you.

When was the last time you were in a fistfight?

Fourth grade. It was a playground thing--two guys didn't like each other; then all of a sudden my group and another group were going at it. I won that fight, so I'm undefeated, I guess. I'd like to retire that way.

Are you still close with any of your childhood friends?

I've been buddies with one guy, Doug, since we were in the fourth grade together in Michigan. We both live in Tampa now. He's a pro golfer. What was your first job?

Other than being a baseball player, I had only one. When I was a junior in high school, I mowed some guy's lawn once for a week. Winter came, the grass was gone and I was out of work.

What's the one thing you believed at 18 that you wish you still believed now?

That people will like you just for being you. It seems now that people like me for all the wrong reasons. What's one thing you'd never do again?

I'll never take a cruise. Once you're on that boat, you can never get away.

How old were you the first time you picked up a girl, and how did you do it?

I was around 11. Her name was Sasha, and I did it because of peer pressure. I asked her out, and she said yes.

Was she your first kiss?

Yeah, in the hallway at school.

Would you date someone famous again?

If I like them, it doesn't matter. If you like someone, you can get through all that.

What's the hardest part of being a man?

Finding a good woman.
