Description: The Skrit Na are a sentient species that undergo metamorphosis between their young and adult stages. The species is thus divided into two halves: the Skrit and the Na. The Skrit are the immature phase of the Skrit Na. They resemble large insects, and have limited sentience and functionality. The Na are the adults, which emerge from the cocoon that a Skrit excretes around its body. The Na are small, and somewhat humanoid. Between three and five feet tall, they have gray skin, and are covered in gray fur. They are symmetrical, with two legs, two hands (each with three fingers and an opposable thumb), two nostrils set deep in the face, a small mouth, ear holes located on the sides of the head, and large black eyes. They generally move on all four limbs, but can assume a bipedal position if desired. The Skrit Na communicate through a spoken language.
Normal Habitat/Environment: Naskreet is a small, gray planet under a standard-size green sun. The green light gives everything on the planet a sickly appearance. Naskreet, to the casual observer, might seem like a dead planet. There is almost no vegetation, aside from a lining of furry fungus that covers the ground up to one inch high. This fungus makes up the main diet of the Skrit Na in both stages, although the methods of consumption are quite different. An atmosphere is provided by the two species itself. The Skrit breathe carbon monoxide and exhale oxygen, while the Na breathe oxygen and exhale carbon monoxide. For this reason, it has always been essential to keep a relative equality between the Na and the Skrit. Thus, population limits have never been a possibility. Naskreet is populated only by two other species – the Greewa, a type of carnivorous, featherless bird, and the Trosil, a species of fish. Until recently, Naskreet had been described as the most boring planet on the universe. However, once the Skrit Na developed space flight, they unlocked a rampaging curiosity. Today, the surface of Naskreet is covered in items from all over the galaxy, one vast museum and collector’s paradise.
Society/Attitude to Others: Within their own species, the Skrit Na are almost completely oblivious of others. There is no formal government, no police or army. The nearest the Skrit Na come are groups called Peslat, which might be translated into "clubs." The driving motivation of the Skrit Na for many years was to escape their incredibly dull planet, but they have now become something of galactic treasure hunters, packrats, museum curators, and zookeepers. Each Skrit Na spacecraft is piloted and operated by a space-faring Peslat. In each Peslat, the Skrit are responsible for manual labor and menial tasks, while the Na are the brains, the planners, and the elite. Outside their species, Skrit Na behavior towards others is completely erratic. Sometimes they ignore aliens, sometimes they perform almost pointless experiments on them, and then return them, and sometimes they kidnap them entirely to be stored in a Skrit Na zoo. Those interacting with the Skrit Na are advised to be cautious, but not to be overly concerned for their safety-–the Skrit Na are generally non-threatening.
Predator : Prey Relationships/Eating Habits: The Skrit Na’s main diet, in both stages, is mainly comprised of kuris, the fuzzy gray fungus that carpets Naskreet. It is generally consumed raw, and through the mouth. For this reason, the obtaining of food has never been much of a challenge for the Skrit Na.
Special Abilities: The metamorphosis of the species is probably their most significant distinctive ability.
Achievements: The Skrit Na achieved space flight independently of other races, and have amassed, collectively, more items from all across known space than the rest of the other species together.
History: Although none of the typical factors for species development were to be found in Skrit Na life-–predators, hunger, adverse weather conditions-–there was one overarching motivation for their continual progress. This may be summed up in one word: boredom. The Skrit Na are an intensely curious and active species as a rule, but their planet offered absolutely no distraction in its natural state. For some time, there was an abundance of Amusement Peslats, which attempted to construct bigger and better amusement parks and works of fiction. However, everything was gray-green and dull, and so not very entertaining. War Peslats fought various wars over the course of Skrit Na history, but these were not of interest to the majority of the species. One year, however, an Outer Space Peslat created a long-range telescope that allowed them to see deep space. Once the Skrit Na had a glimpse of what lay beyond their gray atmosphere, almost every member of the species joined or formed a Space Flight Peslat. Within two hundred years, they were in outer space, and they have not stopped searching for the ultimate thrills yet.
