THE HIND BRAIN

Moving from the back of the skull we come across the Hindbrain is located in the bottom portion of the brain and is an extension of the spinal cord. It is the oldest part, evolutionarily speaking is the oldest portion of the brain. And handles jobs that are basically essential for survival that we don't normally, consciously think about. It contains the Medulla, Pons, Cerebellum, and the Reticular Activating System (RAS).
  1. The medulla-is an oblong structure at the top of the spinal cord that controls many vitals life-support functions such as breathing, heart rate and blood pressure.
  2. Pons-is located above the medulla and connects the lower brain regions. It also helps regulate sensory information and facial expressions.
  3. Cerebellum- Otherwise known as "the little brain" located at the rear of the brain and controls movement, coordination, balance, muscle tone, and learning motor skills.
  4. Reticular Activating Systemmonitors the general level of activity in the Hindbrain and maintains a state of arousal. Essential for regulation of sleep and wakefulness. Sometimes referred to as the Reticular formation
