Depth Psychology

Depth Psychology is an offshoot of Jungian Psychology. It attempts to descibe the stucture, order and dynamics of the psychic life of the individual and the collective uconcious of the society. An example would be how Sigmund Freud claimed that there was a time when a child felt a sexual attraction to the opposite-sex parent. This is was time was named after the greek character of Oedipus and of Elektra. He found this mtyhological situation to be one that occurs within the human experience. Carl Jung on the other hand embrace the idea that these universal characters, that are found within all culture's stories ( heros, villians, Gods, afterlives, reproduction). He named them archetypes. Both Freud and Jung believed that dreams are messages from the collective unconcious and depth psychology will continue look at myths, stories to see if there are messages that we can explain to describe the psyche of humans.
