waiting for my boy

Waiting For My Boy
I get the call and I pack up my things because
I got my work done early.
I can’t wait for tonight because my boy is coming by.
My wife and I have been preparing
For so long since we got word he was coming.
I believe it was 8 ½ months, 33 weeks or 231 days.
I used to get that going until my wife gave me this gaze.
Oh how she has been glowing like a candle undisturbed by the wind
And seen through tired eyes.
She laughed when we got word he would be male
And I ran to toys R Us because they had a sale
For stuff animals with tails
Remote control boats that sail
Comic books that I promise to preserve well.
She shook her head when she said we’ll need more then
trinkets, gadgets and a toy.
Well, I couldn’t think straight
after all, I am waitin’ for my boy.
She handled the purchase of clothes and other baby stuff.
She let me pick up color and sound games
That he could touch.
There good for mental stimulation
and motor skills coordination acquisition
and I am dying with anticipation
to see the union of our two ancestral nations.
When he comes forth will there be a part of you in him I can see
And fall in love again instantly.
Or will he know my secrets and fears
That accompanied me here.
The same ones I received from my father
Because I was his only heir.
I worry and get nervous if you will be wise and true
Or be sneaky and coy.
That’s why when people ask about my preoccupation.
I tell them I am waitn’ for my boy.
So what will it be
Mechanic or designer of cars
Or a multi gold medal Olympic superstar.
Will you be a CEO of a financial dynamo.
Or will you be the one who sits at the information
Who always says he doesn’t know.
Will you be seduced by thugs
Reduced by drugs
Diseased by messing with sluts
Because your arrogant youth
Always had to rebut the lessons
that your parents taught you,
fought through to have brought you to this world
that will not love you just because….
Just because the world will not know what to do with you
And I know what to say to be true because
My uniqueness cause rejection
Which then caused dejection and eventually ejection.
But once I understood what love can do.
Well… we created you.
Not just to smile for a little while
But as long as it takes for a limp ant to cross a mile.
Because you are my child.
My legacy for all to see.
Well all but me because I may never see you clearly,
My vision may always be blurry because I can’t seem to
Stop caring about this prodigy which makes me as proud as can be.
Because I know you are genuine and the real mccoy.
If anyone wants to find me
I’ll be at the hospital waiting for my boy.
I see my earth that holds me down with her gravity
Smile at me.
As we begin to bring you to this plane of existence.
I hold her hand and try not to show my resistance
To the immense pain she to my digits that she is
causing.
I begin pausing my nerve communications
except in my good hand
so that I could wipe off her brow drenched with
perspirations.
Don’t be scared little one the doctor’s a good man and he won’t hurt you.
Although if you get your grandfather’s eyes
Those nurses might just flirt with you.
I begin to chant I love you
To you mother because she had the burden
of your insurgence and rent-free residence.
For letting us two become one
And after the screaming and pushing
It is done.
There you are
Every color except what I expected
But I heard that washes off.
The Doctor checks you breathing
And he just taps you very soft.
I say I love you one more time before
She goes into a deep sleep and I know she heard me.
And I am glad that my optimism didn’t annoy.
I am going to now have a few words with my boy
When I finally see my junior and I introduce myself as his senior
And hold him in the air and say
I will teach you all that I know in due time.
I will teach you the importance of song and rhyme
I will teach you to respect the spirit
And it’s power so you can always keep it.
I will teach you that our ancestors were not kings by birthright
But because they were forthright.
I will try to give you that which I never had.
I will not let you forget the face of you dad.
I will teach you till my days are done.
I have waited a long time for you
My seed, My heir,….. My son
