There seems to be a large misconception that the home of racism. Nothing could be further from the truth. Before you start thinking that there he gose again defending those dastardly Republicans remember I am an independent not a republican.
Where I have come up with the idea that the Republicans aren't the home of racism you may ask. Well there is a great deal of history to back me up.
The Republican party was formed in 1854 in NY, by a group of abolishinist. Abolishinist where the people who where opposed to slavery. They wanted it abolished.
Now I am not naieve enough to believe that all repulicans have no racist believes. The first Republican president Linclon offered to give the blacks in the country an island where they could move to. The leaders who represnted the blacks turned down Linclon's offer because they wanted to be Americans.
Now the party that in large part represented the south was the Democratic party.
The truth of the matter is that most of those from the south stayed Democrat till the 1970's. I do not mean to say that everyone from the south is a racist anymore than all Republicans are.
From the begining of slavery till about the 1970's racism was a view which had wide acceptence within all the various parties among the white people of our country. Not of course that all whites where racist but many accepted it as normal.
During the 1930's through the 40's Elanore Rosevelte tried to raise the awareness of the country concerning the black population.
Now in the 1960's the civil rights movement had moved many to the belief that blacks desevered the same rights as whites. Although the civil rights movement had been around for many many years it started to make a real difference in the 50's and 60's.
Because the black leadeship became vocal and and there where marches that had thousands of people I believe that the federal government began to feel threatened. Then Att. General Robert F Kennedy with the approval of JFK decided to wire tap Rev. Martian Luther King. This to me is not a sign they wanted to move ahead.
In 1964 LBJ puposed the Civil Right Act. His Biggest opposition where again the southern Democrats. Sen. Al Gore Sr.,Sen. Albright, as well as several others opposed and voted against the Civil Rights Act. In fact if it had not been for the Republicans LBJ would never have passed and he would never had The Great Soiciety would never have happened it would have been blocked by the Democrats.
Earlier in the 60's in Alabama Gov. George Wallace(Democrat) tried to block the intagration of Alabama State University which had been ordered by the Supremem Court.
Recently Sen Jess Helms(Republican)annouced his retirement from the Senate. Many of the Democrats are happy to see Sen. Helms and Sen Thurmond leaving the Senate because of thier views on race. I wonder if these same Democrats will feel as much glee when Sen
