Me The Person
Total Recall Hi All, Yup, we go through the budget crisis with regularity. And the recall thing isn’t without precedent either. I guess people just get pissed because the current governor can’t snap his fingers and straighten out the mess that was left by his predecessors. We are a nation of impatient people – fast food, fast internet, fast fixes. We don’t want to wait for anything. |

Governor Davis has his faults, I’m sure. And I’m also sure I’m not looking forward to an increase in the vehicle licensing fees. But the state has to get money from somewhere. Life doesn’t stop because the state has a budget crisis. Schools still try to go on. And they need funding. It does bother me, however, when the lawmakers keep taking their pay but withhold pay from other state employees. They are certainly no better than the average state employee and can probably afford to go without being paid a darn sight more easily than your average state employee. Take my brother in law, for example. He is a corrections officer. Now, just because there isn’t a budget doesn’t mean that he can just not go to work. The prisons still have to be staffed. I mean, really, what are you going to do. “Uh, fellas? Sorry to interrupt your drug deals and sodomy and all that, but we need to let you know that, due to the budget impasse, all guards will be staying at home. We need you to do your part. Be sure to lock your cell door behind you and pick up after yourselves. And please… no escaping. We’re trusting you!” Yeah, like that’s gonna work. No, life has to go on. This time, so far anyway, my brother in law hasn’t missed a paycheck. In previous budget crises, he was paid with IOU’s. All well and good except that no bank would honor them. His mortgage company wasn’t going to take an IOU for a payment. And, if he ever tried to pay his state taxes with an IOU, the state would have been all over him like bees on honey! So, who knows what will happen this time. I know that people are getting pretty fed up with it. And you know it’s bad when the state’s failure to reach a budget agreement no longer makes the front page of the paper. We’ve just become too used to it. As for the recall effort, well, I voted for Gray Davis. Seemed to me he was the lesser of the two weevils that we were offered. It was a dirty campaign, but he was a little cleaner than Bill Simon. And I still don’t think he’s been the Anti-Christ they are trying to make him out. Now, the recall movement was started by someone who wants to take Davis’s job. Yeah, that’s a pure motive that I can get behind. And if people thought Davis had skeletons in his closet, they should see Issa’s closet! From what I’m hearing, he may have to move just to get a bigger closet! Or go to Home Depot for a closet skeleton organizer. I’m sure they have one. Anyway, my point with that is that we need to look behind the motive of everyone’s actions. Darrell Issa makes it sound like he’s doing this for the good of the state. But, really, he wants the job. Davis says he wants to stay for the good of the state. But, again, I’m sure he doesn’t want to lose the job. And now, we may have Arnold Schwarzenegger running for governor. Well, I suppose we could do worse. He’s an intelligent man and has certainly been around politics for awhile. He’s even married into the Kennedy clan, but I can overlook that! I think Arnie’s biggest asset will be his movie background. If the lawmakers won’t pass a budget, he can go around playing Terminator (an aside: would we change the wording from term limits to terminator limits??) – getting rid of all the uncooperative lawmakers and replacing them with replicants who will vote the way he wants them to. And who’s going to try to recall Arnie?? Who’s that brave? Not me! And, ultimately, we know he couldn’t be recalled because, as he always says “I’ll be back!” We’ll be stuck with him forever. Or, at least for a couple more sequels.
Until next time, take care Love,
