Christmas Eve 1993
This story begins on a late, Christmas Eve night. My Mother and I were both out of the Christmas Spirit, not a feeling of being merry between us. Due to a rough year financially and emotionally. As it approached the midnight hour, I said to my Mother, let's go to Midnight Mass, at our local church. She at first refused. To which I said I think it would do us both a world of good to go. We could light a candle for my grandmother who had since been deceased a few years, and could gain the Christmas spirit back. Since the church was only a few blocks away we walked over. It was a cold night, maybe in the high 30's in temperature. There was no sign of rain, nor snow in the air.
Being that we are Catholic in religion, Christmas always takes on a special feeling for my family. When we got to the church, the building was packed, wall to wall with people. Mothers, fathers, children, young and old. The church was filled beyond capacity, they brought chairs for those who could not find a spot in a pew.
During the mass, which was officiated by Father George, we heard a beautiful sermon, along with music, Christmas carols, and good will in abundance. The feeling for my Mother and I, had changed gradually. The mass lasted approxiamately 90mins.
As the mass neared it's conclusion, and they opened the doors for the ending of the mass, a sound of wet roads could be heard. While the thought that it was raining was rampant in my mind. Never did I think it would snow. Nor did I think it was. When mass ended, we followed the priest as he walked up the aisle, with a sculpture of the baby Jesus in his hands to place in the nativity scene which was outside. The miracle, of Christmas unfolded right before our very eyes. For, as we reached the doors of the church, the view of a sidewalk, grass, and trees covered with a beautiful blanket of snow filled our vision, while more of the white flakes fell from the heavenly skies above. It was then, that I told my Mother, that the spirit of Christmas, was very much alive. Someone, up above made sure our Christmas that year made a dramatic change, from one of gloom, and misery, to one of joy, happiness, and peace. It became, not only a White Christmas, but a Merry Christmas.
