Deceased Tarantulas
Kind of Tarantula: Avicularia avicularia
Owner: Jason Perry, volcanopele@hotmail.com
"Kenny was my first spider. I got him at a pet shop when he was 5 months old. He was captive bred; I even knew its mother. Kenny was a good spider, never tried to bite me once. Kenny passed away of unknown causes."
Tarantula's Name: No name as pet.
Kind of Tarantula: Pterinochilus sp."Usambara"
Owner: Fabio De Vita and Stefano Capannini
Age: Date of Purchase: 3/7/1999
Date of Molt: 25/7/1999, dark brown bump on the abdomen
Date of Mating: 20/8/1999
Date of egg sac production: 15/9/1999
Date of death: 2/10/1999, after one week of "slow down"
"At the time of writing spiderlings are not yet emerged, being still nymphs. The spider was clearly WC, very large and I assume old female.
Some problem occurred during the molting process with that bump, but after that the spider was well mated and produced a large egg sac. Slowly died, but always was ready to protect and defend the eggs, jealously
guarding it even when close to death. On the morning of 2/10/1999 we found her dead above the egg sac. The spider's efforts and death were however repaid by the production of at least 200 spiderlings. I consider this death caused by many things, all together: that bump on the abdomen, the stress from mating and egg sac production, old age."
Tarantula's Name: Moe
Kind of Tarantula: Avicularia Aviculi
Owner: Brian, TxFang@aol.com
Time He Had It: 8 months
Size: About 3 3/4 inches
"It was my misfortune (and Moe's) that I read Avic's could be kept in small colonies, with other Avics, as long as they had ample space, and were well fed... Those two criteria were met very well, but after a molt, Larry [yes, Larry, Curly, and Moe] got very cranky, and ate poor Moe... For a time, in my grief stricken state, I contemplated introducing Larry to Birdie, my 8' T. Blondi, o see how he liked being dinner, but I overcame that... He was, after all, just acting on instinct...
So, rest well Moe... You're missed, and fondly remembered..."
