Setting Marketing Goals for 2012

The great thing about looking ahead to a new year is that it presents 12 months of opportunity and the prospect of a fresh start.

January is the perfect time to begin creating marketing strategies and goals to set the tone for the coming year. Now is when you'll be breaking out of old unproductive habits of the past and establish new ones that will help you get where you want to be going.

Here's a list of suggested top-five marketing habits to keep in mind as you plan your business strategy for the coming year:

  1.  Create a written marketing plan or improve upon the one you already have
  2. Commit at least a half an hour a day to increasing your knowledge about different aspects of small business marketing
  3. Establish a goal of working on marketing for an hour every day. That could consist of writing and sending out sales letters, emailing prospects, writing a blog, writing and posting an article about an interesting aspect of your business or industry, attending a networking meeting or seminar, posting an announcement on your Facebook page, etc
  4. Avoid reinventing the wheel. There are sales letter templates, flyer templates, and business proposal software that can help you effectively communicate with existing and prospective clients and customers.
  5. Seriously consider working with a web designer, graphic designer, and/or an experienced writer when creating your business website, ads, flyers, brochures, marketing letters, or logos. The image you project to the public directly affects your ability to attract and retain clients.

What is Marketing?

One questions that millions of Internet users are searching for every month is "What is Marketing?" My assumption is that a large percentage of those Google searchers are high school or college students doing research on the topic. Being that there's over nine million searches on Google for that question, I'm also assuming that a few million of those searchers are small business owners and professionals trying to gain some insights into small business marketing strategies and what exactly the umbrella term "marketing" encompassses.

NOTE: If you're looking for an official definition of marketing, your best bet is to search for "definition marketing" on Google.

Marketing basically boils down to any activitY which is done with the intention of advertising, publicizing, educating, or increasing the public's awareness of a product, a service, an organization, a political candidate, a charity, or a cause, such as getting a school budget passed. Marketing encompasses a lot of different types of strategies, including branding, public relations, product packaging, methods of product distribution, business locations (convenience and accessibility come into play), and other elements of a marketing plan.

When a business or organization creates a marketing campaign that combines several different marketing techniques into an organized plan, it's often referred to as an integrated marketing strategy.

Marketing Strategies for New Businesses

Marketing a business can be a challenging thing to do effectively for several reasons:

Those are among the reasons that small businesses need to have some sort of marketing strategy plan in order to create what is sometimes referred to as "Top of Mind Awareness" among your customers and potential customers.

Creating a Good First Impression Matters

Having a professionally-designed business card, rather than the DIY variety that you can create on your computer, is probably the first important step in creating a professional image. Dozens of other things can either build up or tear down the image you put out there, and that can include your website, brochures, signage, invoices and forms, advertising flyers, company logo, slogan, personal appearance, and the appearance of your vehicles and place of business.

Great service and effective communication are among the best ways to win repeat business and give people a reason to recommend your company to others. Everybody likes to feel special, appreciated, and important; so when the owner and all the employees at a business treat customers and clients like they're appreciated, then it makes them want to be loyal customers and tell other people about the great service they get at this business.

There are dozens of marketing strategies you can use to use to generate leads, inquiries, and public awareness of your business; but if you can't create repeat business and convert first-time customers into loyal customers, then building your client base will feel like an uphill battle!
