Hello and welcome to the Lusosarge’s web page. Much has happen since I last update about a year ago. And as many we are sadden by the events of September 11, 2001. The loss of life by the cowardice and evil attack of religious fanatic’s is tragic. But the loss of so many Firemen, Policemen, Emergency Medical Technicians and a Court Officer is horrific. Knowing that these brave and noble people gave their lives so save so many could escape certain death whilst tragically succumbing themselves and leaving behind their families is heart breaking beyond belief. In the mix were several of my future wife’s family, brave FDNY Firemen. Fortunately after several frantic hours of not knowing of their faith we were lucky, all came home to us alive. Over the next two months I was humbled that I was able to serve at the WTC in various capacities along with my fellow Police brothers from all over the country and along side the brave members of the FDNY. One heroic cop was Antonio Rodrigues of the Port Authority of NY/NJ Police Department. One of the proud, brave and heroic men to have perished on 9-11-2001. Police Officer Rodrigues was Portuguese American and we are proud of him. Please donate to the POLICE and FIREMEN widows and orphans fund. The link below will take you there. Support you local Police and Fireman. Remember in your hearts the ultimate sacrifice they gave. Support our troops overseas and reject the evils of fanatical religions. May God bless you, your family and the families of the victims of 9-11-2001.

This website is dedicated to the exceptional men and women of Law Enforcement, with special interest in the New York State Park Police and Portuguese American Law Enforcement Officers. On this website you will find some neat photographs, good & welfare information, some fun graphics, a special interest in the wonderful Portuguese culture, those great Portuguese American Police Officers, a bulletin board, guest book and special interest in the NYS Park Police. Please enjoy, laugh and get mad as hell at the way the State of New York and OPR&HP under pays its Police Officers. When you are done web surfing please call your local and state elected officials and tell them you are mad as hell and want the State of New York and OPR&HP to treat its cops right.

For Y2K we kept the Queens shoreline secure from terroists. Why Queens you ask? Because the opposite side of the East River included the United Nations, Queens Midtown Tunnel and the Queensboro Bridge. The detail included NYS Enviromental Conservation Police and Metropolitan Transportation Police (formerly the LIRRPD)

Of course I am not a Giants fan. Hail the New England Patriots a real football team.

POLICE OFFICER Benansky RECEIVES LIFESAVING MEDAL

ALBANY, NY, June 8, 2000….Major Anthony G. Ellis II, Director of Law Enforcement presented the 2000 New York State Park Police Service Awards on May 23 at the Gideon Putnam Hotel in Saratoga Spa State Park. Aided by Assistant Director Michael C. Daly, Major Ellis awarded Lifesaving Medals to Police Officer Heath Benansky of Taconic Region for his courageous actions.
While on patrol at Mills-Norrie State Park last October 17, Officer Benansky was notified that a 64-year-old man had passed out near the edge of the woods. Officer Benansky and an off-duty medical technician performed CPR to sustain the victim’s life. When the Staatsburg Rescue Squad arrived, Officer Benansky assisted with further treatment and helped load the victim into the ambulance. The victim survived the trip to the hospital and was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit. Officer Benansky’s expertise and quick action were instrumental in saving the man’s life.
POLICE OFFICERS Cuevas AND Vail RECEIVE AWARDS

ALBANY, NY, June 8, 2000 – Major Anthony G. Ellis II, Director of Law Enforcement, Aided by Assistant Director Michael C. Daly, Major Ellis awarded Medal of Merit awards to Police Officers Elieser Cuevas and Brandon Vail of Long Island Region for their courageous actions.
While off duty last August 23, in his personal vehicle Officer Cuevas observed two males running from a closed store. Hearing an audible alarm and observing one of the subjects wearing a mask, he chased the subjects and captured one securing him with his own shoelaces. Responding officers captured the other subject. The subjects had burglarized a telephone store and were fleeing with stolen property. Officer Vail responded to a report of multiple swimmers caught in a riptide at Montauk last August 29. Upon his arrival at the scene, a rescue was in progress by East Hampton Town Police Officers and lifeguards. During the rescue attempt, but after the initial victims were safely out of the water, the two East Hampton Police Officers became caught in the riptide and were in severe distress. Officer Vail then entered the water with a rescue rope. That first rope broke. He then entered the water on a surfboard with another line and was able to reach the officers and assist them to shore. All of the victims have since fully recovered.

POLICE OFFICERS Halterman, Moriarty, Bosilkovski, Marcyan, Finnegan, Guesno and Klimjack RECEIVE AWARDS

ALBANY, NY, June 8, 2000…..Major Anthony G. Ellis II, Director of Law Enforcement, aided by Assistant Director Michael C. Daly presented the 2000 New York State Park Police Service Awards on May 23. Major Ellis awarded Director of Law Enforcement’s Commendations to six officers, Sergeant Thomas Halterman of Allegany Region, Sergeant Patrick Moriarty, Sergeant Lazar Bosilkovski, Officer John Marcyan, Officer Peter Finnegan of Niagara Frontier Region, and Officer Robert Guesno Genesee Region. In addition, Major Ellis awarded the Medal of Merit to Officer Frank Klimjack of Genesee Region.
Three officers were involved in a life-threatening situation last August, when they received a report of a distraught woman heading down the rapids in the Niagara River toward the falls. As soon as helicopters spotted the woman, Sergeants Moriarty and Bosilkovski and Officer Marcyan, all of the Niagara Region, entered the water to attempt a rescue. A sheriff’s helicopter pulled the woman to safety, but, at the same time, the rotor wash created extremely hazardous circumstances for the three officers. By assisting one another and working as a team, the officers made it safely to shore.
Sergeant Thomas Halterman of the Allegany Region received his commendation for his contributions to information management. The award recognizes his innovative approaches, technological proficiency and the countless hours he devoted to enable the region to process information and make it available at a moment’s notice.
Officers Gesno and Klimjack of the Genesee Region received commendation awards for preventing a suicide from the rim of the Genesee River Gorge. The officers located a woman hanging onto a stonewall near the rim. They were able to speak to her and hold her attention without her noticing that they were putting on rescue harnesses. When she attempted to change her position, both officers leaped over the wall, grabbed the woman, pulled her to relative safety and then back over the wall.

POLICE OFFICERS Rodriguez, Arce and Martinez RECEIVE AWARDS
Parade magazine has chosen one of our own as one of the top ten police officers in the country. P.O.Eddie C. Rodriguez of the NYS Park Police, risked his own life to save a young man from drowning in the Harlem River. His heroics were recognized by the Bronx Borough President and by the LOA(Latin Officers Assoction). We here at the NYSPP are very proud that such an honor is being bestowed upon Officer Rodriguez.
Thank you Major Ellis for the offer of paying Officer Rodriguez expenses to North Carolina to receive his award.

ALBANY, NY, June 8, 2000….Major Anthony G. Ellis II, Director of Law Enforcement aided by Assistant Director Michael C. Daly presented awards to Officers Edward C. Rodriguez , Roberto Martinez and Detective Tony Arce of New York City Region.
Officer Edward C. Rodriguez received the Medal of Honor for leaping into the icy waters of the Harlem River at Roberto Clemente State Park to keep a 12-year-old afloat until rescuers on shore were able to launch a rescue attempt.
Officer Roberto Martinez and Detective Tony Arce, who were on shore, located a cable to use as a lifeline and worked together to pull the boy, then the officer, to safety. For saving the lives of the boy and their fellow officer, Martinez and Arce were awarded Lifesaving Medals.

    The Portuguese History Section
I have received several emails asking what is the meaning of Luso in LUSOSARGE. In this section I hope to answer that question and many others about the Portuguese, their culture and history. Keep posted because what a fascinating culture and history we have!

Meaning of the symbols and colors of the Portuguese Flag:
The five blue shields represent the five Morisco kings Don Afonso Henriques (the father of the Portuguese kingdom) defeated in the Ourique battle.
The white shield with the five small blue shields inside is the Armor of Don Afonso Henriques. The legend has it that in the Ourique battle the crucified Christ appeared before Don Afonso Henriques and said: "With this sign (the white shield), you will win!".
The dots inside each of the blue shield represent the five wounds of Christ. Counting the number of dots in the shields, doubling the ones in the center shield yields a total of thirty dots representing the thirty silver pieces Judas received for having betrayed Jesus Christ.
The seven castles around the white shield represent the fortified locations that Don Afonso Henriques conquered to the Moriscos.
The yellow sphere represents the world that Portuguese navigators discovered in the fifteenth (XV) and sixteenth (XVI) centuries as well as the people with whom they exchanged ideas and trade.
The green color represents hope and the red the courage and the blood of the Portuguese fallen in combat.
Authors of the flag: Columbano, João Chagas and Abel Botelho.

    O verde simboliza a esperança.
O vermelho simboliza a coragem e o sangue dos Portugueses mortos em combate.

MOZAMBIQUE TO APPEAL FOR AID IN WAKE OF CYCLONE ELINE
PLEASE HELP OUR AFRICAN BROTHERS IN OUR FORMER COLONY

After Cyclone Eline ripped roofs from houses and cut off power and water supplies in flood-stricken Mozambique, relief workers are scrambling to deliver food and other supplies to areas deluged by the storm and weeks of unrelenting rains. A humanitarian appeal for $13 million in international aid is expected to be launched on Wednesday, relief workers say.
In Mozambique, at least two deaths were reported from the cyclone and another 67 people have died in the flooding, according to reports. More than 200,000 have been forced from their homes by two weeks of torrential rains. Officials say refugees are now at risk for outbreaks of water-borne disease, such as cholera, malaria, and meningitis.
Cyclone Eline hit the coast on Tuesday near the central town of Beira with winds of up to 260 kmh (160 mph). The storm left widespread damage along the coastline, from Inhambane to Beira, as it cut power and water supplies, tore corrugated-iron roofs from houses, and uprooted coconut palm trees and telegraph poles.
The cyclone follows two weeks of flooding, and vast tracts of land in southern Mozambique are submerged. Thousands of people there are reportedly seeking shelter on high ground. Logistical problems are hampering their rescue as roads and bridges have been washed away. Red Cross officials in Mozambique have also been using helicopters with UNICEF and Doctors Without Borders to assess the situation.
The Mozambican Government estimates that a total of 800,000 people have been affected across the country, with most of them in urgent need of food aid and assistance, according to the U.N. Families living in the Limpopo Valley had no food and little clean water, and outbreaks of dysentery were rampant. Many people are at risk from water-borne disease, malaria, and malnourishment.
"The overcrowded conditions under which the displaced people now live pose a danger of an outbreak of epidemics that could affect at least 800,000 Mozambicans," Carlos Tiny of the World Health Organization said, in comments circulated by the U.N.

      Even Santa Has Bad Days:
One particular Christmas season a long time ago, Santa was getting ready for his annual trip, but there were problems everywhere. Four of his elves got sick, and the trainee elves did not produce the toys as fast as the regular ones so Santa was beginning to feel the pressure of being behind schedule. Then Mrs. Claus told Santa that her Mom was coming to visit. This stressed Santa even more. When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two had jumped the fence and were out, heaven knows where. More stress. Then when he began to load the sleigh, one of the boards cracked, and the toy bag fell to the ground and scattered the toys. So, frustrated, Santa went into the house for a cup of apple cider and a shot of rum. When he went to the cupboard, he discovered that the elves had hidden the liquor, and there was nothing to drink. In his frustration, he accidentally dropped the cider pot, and it broke into hundreds of little pieces all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found that mice had eaten the straw end of the broom. Just then the doorbell rang, and irritable Santa trudged to the door. He opened the door, and there was a little angel with a great big Christmas tree. The angel said, very cheerfully, "Merry Christmas, Santa. Isn't it a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to stick it?" Thus began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree.

      New Bike:
On Christmas morning a cop on horseback is sitting at a traffic light, and next to him is a kid on his shiny new bike. The cop says to the kid, "Nice bike you got there. Did Santa bring that to you?" The kid says, "Yeah." "Well, next year tell Santa to put a tail-light on that bike," The cop says, then proceeds to issue the kid a $20.00 bicycle safety violation ticket. The kid takes the ticket and before he rides off says, "By the way, that's a nice horse you got there. Did Santa bring that to you?" Humoring the kid, the cop says, "Yeah, he sure did." The kid says, "Well, next year tell Santa to put the dick underneath, instead of on top."
