William G. Morgan

Inventor Of Volleyball

William Morgan was born in Lockport in 1870. His parents later sent him to a private school in Massachusetts. It was in Massachusetts that he met, and became friends with James Naismith who invented basketball. Naismith convinced Morgan to move to Springfield Ma. and become the physical director at a YMCA. Morgan observed that basketball was to stenuous for some people to play, this led to him inventing volleyball. In 1910 Morgan moved back to Lockport and in 1917 Spalding Sprting Goods published the first volleyball rulebook. Morgan worked for Harrison Radiator in Lockport until his death in 1942. He is buried in Glenwood cemetary.
