Okay. The hurricane was a big deal. 45 people dead up and down the east coast. This was a tragedy. Let us not discount that. But the massacre at Wedgwood Baptist in Fort Worth, TX was a tragedy of epic proportions, considering the circumstances. 8 dead at the hands of a deranged middle age man with a bad hair style, a bitter raised-a-Baptist kind of guy, who enjoyed a little target practice, a little public lewdness.

The fact that this horrific event took place within the four walls of a Southern Baptist church seems to have made the media outside of the Lone Star State a little uneasy about throwing lots of money down to get their reporters there.

Columbine – any magazine, newspaper, television affiliate with a reader/viewership of 10 was in Littleton, harassing 15 year old girls – "What were your first thoughts as you saw your best friend’s brains splattered on the tile floor?" – and this was in a school – it wasn’t the first time, and, God save us, it will most likely not be the last.

So, why the apparent snub? Perhaps with the backlash following the events in Colorado, some outlets felt to be more careful about shoving cameras, mics and ruled pads in faces down there in Texas.

Doubt it.

Why? Because since when did the media ever care about taste when it got in the way of a good story.

Even the night of the massacre, all three news channels (CNN, MSNBC, Fox News) were slow to jump on the wagon, instead showing endless footage of diminutive female reporters getting tossed about by storm winds in the Carolina’s, with Fox News first giving mass coverage to the Texas tragedy. CNN was the last to show any extensive footage, and was back to the ‘cane sooner than it left.

But even Fox News, the following day began to cast about, with baloney-ridden segments entitled "When is Enough Enough?"

Right.

One simple explanation was the amount of money spent to cover the hurricane, so the news channels can be forgiven for interspersing coverage of the church incident on that first night, but what of the days following?

In a rare moment of clarity, newbie columnist Rod Dreher at the New York Post, made the case that if this had been a gay social club, another Jewish community center, what have you – the country would have been in meltdown.

But no – it was (eeew!) a Southern Baptist church. The denomination that gives the Christian faith a bad name.

Don’t care for the Southern Baptists. Don’t like most of the middle-american denominations. They’re judgmental, narrow, petty and legalistic. Not so sure about the faith myself.

However, that doesn’t mean I can’t be mad as hell that we’ve chosen to all but ignore the horror.

I don’t have a whole lot more to say – I’m disappointed. It’s time to take a hard look at this ridiculous sea change – as I already said – invert the circumstances, and it’d be a scene and a half.

Did anyone stop to think about the effects this will have on Texas, gun owners heaven? Will it have any if we simply ignore any discussion?

All I know is, the media failed this one – miserably. Let’s hope that with the passing of Floyd, there’s a little retrospection in store – but as anyone knows, we’re not the greatest at that.

The country should be showing it’s support – why should Texas endure this one alone?

Something stinks here. Bad.
