PROGRAMS: The Hyperion entered service around the time of the Dilgar War. She was designed as a compliment to the larger and more powerful Nova-class Dreadnought. Several hundred were built between that time and the Earth-Minbari War and most of them were destroyed fighting the Minbari. Since the war, a number of so-called Hyperion IIs have been built, having been upgraded with weapons purchased from the Narn. Earlier vessels began to receive these weapons in refits after 2255.
STRUCTURE: The Hyprion incorporated many new features since the Nova, including improved sensors and command and control facilities. It also had an improved power grid, overcoming the dreadnought's faults in that area. The Hyperion did not posses the heavy aromor or firepower of the Nova, but was more maneuverable and less vulnerable to fighter attack with its 5 twin particle arrays. The speed and maneuverability of the Hyperion, though superior to the older dreadnoughts, was still less than stellar when compared to vessels of other races.
OPERATIONAL: During the Earth-Minbari War, the Hyperion-class served as a jack-of-all trades. It was a fleet command center, screening vessel for the slower and more powerful Novas, and conducted such memorable independent operations as the Battle of Three Suns, in which a pair of Hyperions under the command of then-Captain Thierry Moreau destroyed four Ch'lonas cruisers. Now, however, the Hyperion has become a second-tier support ship for the new Omega-class destroyers.
