Swing Out Sister came out of Manchester in the late '80s, but don't really have much in common with the other, more psychedelic groups on that scene; they play smooth, jazz-inflected synth-pop. They began as a trio of Martin Jackson (drums), Andy Connell (keyboards), and former fashion designer Corrine Drewery (vocals). Jackson left the group after their first album, which produced the Top Ten hit "Breakout," but still helped with the drum programming. The group attempted a less excessive, '60s pop sound on its next album.
