Lesson Title:

The Global Art Gallery -Via the Internet

Subject Area: Art History

Grade Level: 9-12

Lesson Summary:

The students will work in groups to create a museum, which examines global art and history and/or politics during the time period from the turn of the century to World War II (1900-1945).

Objective/Content Standard/Benchmark:

To develop students' understanding of a specific period of time as examined through art from around the world. To research using Encarta Encyclopedia 98 and the school and community libraries. To successfully create hyperlinks to related web sites based on the art pieces the students have chosen. To add a second component including the history of the region and political incidents occurring when the piece was created.

One Week

Prerequisite Skills:

Basic research skills, as well as, an understanding of the Internet and search engines, use of Microsoft Publisher 98.

Procedures:

Steps: Working from your group gallery page, you will: 1. Search for the history and/or politics for the region and appropriate time period. (1900-1945) 2. Create hyperlinks to their gallery. 3. Search for the artwork or other information about each particular artist. 4. Create hyperlinks for each artist using the picture as the link.

Modifications for Differentiated Instruction:For the special needs student:

There will only be one special needs student assigned per group. All instructions will be read aloud. All special needs students will be assigned a task specific to their learning modality strength. For example, "Alex" would be the designated typist.

For the gifted student:

Gifted students will add to the gallery, according to their strengths. For example, a student could create a link explaining careers in museums such as, curatorship and art restoration. For a student with more advanced computer skills, they could create a "cat burglar" to steal one of the art works and leave behind a message about art theft and/or art forgery.

Student Assessment:

1. Each group will be evaluated for its participant's cooperation and productivity. 2. The students will be graded on the appropriateness of the links they have chosen. 3. The students will take a quiz based on the information contained in the links.

Lesson Evaluation:

There will be various types of evaluation. 1. The students will complete the web page with 90% accuracy. 2. The project will be evaluated on student's choice and relevancy of web sights found. 3. The student will complete an evaluation on the validity of the project and suggest changes for the next lesson. 4. The majority of the students will receive a 75% or above on the teacher designed quiz
