ROCKAWAY in colonial times was an uninhabited wasteland of sand and scrub growth, but, as early as 1833, a seaside hotel was built in Far Rockaway that lasted till 1864. Hotels, boarding housed, saloons, amusement houses and baths sprang up by the dozen over the next thirty years. With its miles of beautiful sandy beaches along the Atlantic Ocean, everyone could afford Rockaway – the round-trip fare by rail was only fifty cents and the beach shared with Coney Island the status of being New York’s favorite summer resort.
