"From the beginning, Lauryn was that kid who took the hairbrush and sang in front of the mirror, she was the little girl who wanted to dress up, always. And she told me, I don't know what part of show business I'll be in, but I'll be in it." --Valerie Hill, Mother
BASIC BIO~ AND SO THE STORY UNFOLDS...Lauryn Hill was born May 25th, 1975, the second and only daughter of Mal, a computer consultant, and Valerie, a high school English teacher. Lauryn grew up in the working-class section of South Orange, New Jersey. When she was young, she found her mother's old 45s and such, and fell in love with music. At age 8, she knew the history of soul music. Growing up, music was always involved with my family some how; her father sang at weddings, her mother studied piano, and her brother Malaney played guitar, sax, and drums. At age thirteen she sang Smokey Robinson's "Who's Lovin' You" on Showtime At The Apollo. Around the time of the performance at the Apollo, Lauryn began hanging out with a friend from junior high named Prakazrel"Pras"Michel and his cousin Wyclef Jean. She'd spend hours in Wyclef's basement, jumping from writing lyrics to doing Spanish homework and history papers. In time, they became known as the Fugees(Tranzlator Crew), and were signed to Columbia/Ruffhouse records. The group released "Blunted On Reality" in '93 and disappointingly didn't do so well. Then 3 years later they released "The Score" which was thankfully successful, winning 2 Grammies. The group seperated and had it's ups and downs. Lauryn knew she had to continue with her music and began working in the studio, and she began to form a solo project which resulted in "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" which is a very personal album for her. She's also really religious, and is comfortable talking about God in public. Also in 1993 Lauryn starred in "Sister Act 2:Back In the Habit" also starring Whoopi Goldberg, which did well. She also had other experiences in acting when she starred in "As The World Turns" as Kira.
Currently she's 26 and living in South Orange, children:Zion David and Selah Louise. The love of her life is Rohan Marley, the father of her two children, and the great Bob Marley's son.
