After the Cultural Revolution of the 60's, society coined a new term in its insistence for 'redeeming social value' in cultural media. Within the movie industry, drama remained the most important category in its repertoire, though the trend towards action/adventure was a vital influence. By combining these genres, the industry was confident they could satisfy their audiences' lust for dynamism while continuing their own pursuits in the development of film for artistic quality.

The following categories have been chosen for review in this study: war drama, speculative fiction, suspense/drama, crime drama, and social drama.
