CENTRAL STATION (TWO ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATIONS!)
Surely the most impressive film to emerge from South America this decade,
CENTRAL STATION is that rarest of achievements - a film that speaks to the
head while it touches the heart. This affecting yet often humorous story
centers around the road trip of an unlikely duo: a bitter old woman who
writes (and rarely posts) letters for Rio's
illiterate at the central train station, and a young boy who loses his
mother in a bus accident right outside the station. Resisting her initial
impulse to make a quick
profit off the child, the old woman commits to returning him to his father
in Brazil's remote Northeast. The two plunge into the wild landscape,
traveling by buses and trucks as they venture deeper into the country and
their own hearts. Winner of Best Picture & Best Actress awards at the 1998
Berlin Film Festival and named Best Foreign Film of the Year by the
National Board of Review.
