won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film and the Golden Lion Award at the Venice International Film Festival. The
Academy Award for Rashomon is of particular historical importance as it was the first Japanese film released in the United
States following World War II Rashomon, which began an era of classic Japanese film, is generally referred to as one of the
greatest films ever made by one of the world's greatest directors. It is taught in film schools and film appreciation classes

"Throne of Blood" Akira Kurosawa film (new sealed)
Throne of Blood, based on Akira Kurosawa’s interpretation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Toshiro Mifune plays a military
general who cheats and murders his way up to the highest rank of feudal lord, urged on by his ambitious wife and by the
prophecies of a witch. As Kurosawa described the film, “I enjoyed Macbeth and it made me think in many ways. Many similar
characters could be found in the age of civil war in Japan, equivalent to the period Shakespeare is writing about in Scotland. In
many ways it was not unnatural to transfer Shakespeare's play to the age of civil strife in Japan “. Look for the close-ups of
Mifune in the final death scene (one of the greatest ever filmed). The arrows stinking around him are real. Off-screen archers
were actually shooting arrows within inches of Mifune. He later said “It took very little acting in that scene to look very scared”.

"Yojimbo" Akira Kurosawa film (new sealed)
Yojimbo is possibly Kurosawa's most purely entertaining film. Mifune stars as the gruff but lovable Ronin (Samuria without a master) Sanjuro.
His Wanderings bring him to a small village in which two outlaw clans are battling for control. As the fastest sword in town, Mifune's services start a
biddig war and a battle over who will have him and the town as thier own. Yojimbo has been so often imitated that is is basically the godfather of all spaghetti
westerns. It was first remade as "A fist full of dollars" staring Clint Eastwood (making him an international star). It has been imitated dozzens of times since
(most recently in "Last man standing starring Bruce Willis). Yojimo's ballance of action, light hummor and a warriors code of honor have made it the standard by
which all followed. Durring their original release "Yojimbo" and it's follow up "Sanjuro" were the most finacially succesfull of Kurosawa's early films. The
spirit which made them a hit with audiences then has lost nothing with time.
