Curriculum and Methods

KINDERGARTEN

St. Eugene School Kindergarten is a full day program. Using an interactive, integrated and manipulative program, the students are taught all the readiness skills needed to enter the first grade. Literature is a strong part of the program. Part of each day is devoted to learning the beginning teachings of our faith. Religion is also incorporated throughout the program.

Students are encouraged to grow academically, physically, spiritually and socially and are allowed to do so at their own pace and ability. Kindergarten students participate in all school functions and activities and partake in special classes - gym - art - music and computer.

PRIMARY GRADES

Students in our first, second and third grades are instructed daily in all the basic skills included in Religion, Reading, Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies and Penmanship. Students participate in Physical Education, Art, Music and Computer classes on a weekly basis. The guidelines mandated by New York State and the Archdiocese of New York are observed and executed according to the individual needs of our students.

All classes are self-contained with a full time teacher and, for the first grade, where the move is from readiness to fluency in the reading program, a part-time aide. Second grade is a special year for spiritual growth when children receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist. The fundamental skills taught in these grades are reviewed and enhanced in third grade where new concepts are developed, studied, and mastered.

In all three grades, the students are taught to value and respect themselves and others. The teachings of Jesus are an integral part of our curriculum as students move forward to meet the challenge of higher academic achievement and growth in Catholic faith.

ELEMENTARY GRADES

Children entering fourth and fifth grades are prepared to think critically and to work more independently. Therefore, fourth graders are introduced to the departmental approach of instruction. Fourth graders switch teachers for Science and Social Studies. Fifth graders switch classes for Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. Thus the children are more prepared and at ease for changing classes at the departmental level of Grades 6-7-8.

The fifth grade D.A.R.E. Program helps children recognize and resist the pressure that may influence them to experiment with alcohol or drugs. Students also learn how violence hurts everybody.

A parish priest visits fifth grade classrooms and reinforces the curriculum, especially the study of the sacraments, and leads discussions on attitude, behavior, and respect for others.

All state requirements are met with emphasis on technology and creative writing.

MIDDLE SCHOOL GRADES

The teachers in the departmental program at St. Eugene School have a comprehensive program of education and preparation for high school as their goals. It is our belief that, when the students leave St. Eugene’s for high school, they will be well prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. The students study Religion, Math, Reading, Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science everyday. Each student has one period per week of gym, art, computer, and Italian. Eighth graders are offered the option to study Latin as well as the above. Those eighth graders, who qualify, study Math 9 in addition to the regular classes.

In addition to academics, we strive to teach the students to respect themselves and others. We also foster an environment that allows each individual to reach for goals – both educational and spiritual – and to achieve them. We challenge them to surpass their goals. We encourage individuality in each child.
