1/2/2003 Day 23!
I know in some of the past puppy diaries I talked more about breed specific things. (coat, health, etc.) And in some I talk more about the day to day things with the
pups... cost of the litter, amount of cleaning involved with day to day care, genetic health of dogs, cleaning, screening puppy buyers, care of the bitch, cleaning..... I
don't want every puppy diary to look like the same thing, with just different pictures. One thing people commented about was I stopped putting in individualized
comments about how the pups respond to different things. I did this for a reason. I saw that my puppy families once they knew who they were getting, would read
a lot into these comments. How this pup responded to day 4 of the Bio Sensor Exercises, how that pup scored in the puppy evaluation... that this other
pup was the last to get out of the whelping box.... Every day is different for a puppy. No, not every day... every minute! Right now one puppy may be doing things
that gets him noticed on this day. Tomorrow a different puppy may be doing those things. This is a period of rapid change.
Right now there are certain pups that stand out. But one of the reasons they may stand out, is they are exhibiting things that I am looking for for my personal self.
Remember, I bred this litter for me. ;-) I brought Ripple and Tarras's genes together because I was looking for something specific. Part of it looks, part of
it on paper (pedigree) and a big part of it in how I hope the working ability and temperament will be. Right now I can't tell anything about looks. So I focus on how
they act, how they respond to noise, touch, sight. I try to evaluate how this litter is acting at this age to other litters at the same age, all the time thinking how those
pups turned out as adults. I spend hours watching them. I may type down one little sentence about a pup that matches a picture I took... that does not mean that it
matches what the pup does the majority of the time!
Right now if you just took a casual look at the litter, it would look like Blue boy was the most outgoing boy, and yellow girl the most outgoing girl. Green boy spends a lot of time 'stalking' under the pig rails.... may look like he is hiding. But he is also the one that spends a lot of time looking for a way out! He doesn't have the hang of it yet, and spends a lot of time trying to get out in the corner that faces a wall.... but he tries for the wall more than anyone else. Maybe his stalking under the pig rails is his way of trying to figure out a way out of the box. Blue boy, who looks very outgoing, social, and always checks out the camera... he is also sorta whiny right now! If he doesn't get his way, he lets you know it. You pick him up, he whines. You put him down he barks at you. he sees mom outside the box, he barks or whines... while green boy tries to find a way to get to her. Red boy is most apt to play with the toys. He is the first I have seen actually carrying around a toy. (bigger than he was!) This of course does not mean he will be the mouthiest or the best bird dog... they are only 22 days old! They have a lot of growing to do!
Right now there isn't much to do with the pups. I will probably start thinking about trying them on puppy mush soon. Usually I have large litters, so I do it to take some of the work off the mom. Rip has plenty of milk.... but the pups are sprouting teeth now! So, it may start getting uncomfortable for her!! I way sitting in the whelping box earlier today (yea, that's a picture isn't it!!) and they were nibbling on my sock feet, and hands. I'll worm them again tomorrow. Both the 2 wk and 3 wk slot fell on a holiday... (Xmas and New Years day) so I didn't want to worm them on those days. Although it would be easy dates for me to remember when making out the health history forms!

(Kyra owned by Mary Kay Morel) March 10th At the Maryland Sporting Dog Association Show, (Finn) CH Fairway SoftMaple Finnheir CGC went Winners Dog for his third major win to finish his AKC Championship. Her niece SoftMaple Pheasant Dreams is first in the 6-9 puppy class at her first show.
