Tremors is one of the best
monster movies ever made. Created in 1989 it leaned back on the old 1950's
horror movies style using incredible creatures, in this case some HUGE
creatures called Graboids. It featured such stars as Michael Gross (Family
Ties), Fred Ward, Victor Wong, Bobby Jacoby, Ariana
Richards (Jurassic Park), Kevin Bacon, and Reba McEntire ! Once this movie
hit the box office it grossed over 16.667 million dollars in the US alone.
It showed up in other countries such as Sweden, Germany, and France. However
it made it's stardom from video rentals and TV broadcasts. This baby is
a rental favorite and the USA Network plays it, for what seems, every month.
This movie was followed by a sequel in 1995 entitled "Tremors 2 : Aftershocks",
and because of the success of the original Tremors on home video it was
sent straight to it; not even bothering to play in the theaters. This sequel
was one that every one wanted to see made, Phill Tippet personally went
to work on this one instead of just having his "people" work on it. The
creatures were superb, using a combination of animatronic puppets and the
same computer image generators as Jurassic Park. Fred Ward, Michael Gross,
Christopher Gartin (M.A.N.T.I.S.), and Helen Shaver (Poltergeist : The
Legacy) stared in this movie about the Graboids reappearance in Mexico
along with a little surprise!
After that in 2001 "Tremors 3: Back to Perfection" was released. Michael Gross reprised his roll as Burt Gummer as well as the return of Melvin Plug, Miguel, Nancy & Mindy Sterngood played by their original actors. Also along with them came Susan Chuang (Dharma & Greg) and Shawn Christian (As the World Turns). This time the creatures can fly!
Following the 3rd movie came the short lived TV series in 2003. Airing just 13 episodes, Michael Gross is the only actor from the original movie, although other characters were brought back. New crew members included Lela Lee (The Girls' Room), Gladys Jimenez (The Young and the Restless), Marcia Strassman (Honey, I Shrunk the Kids) to mention a few, it even had repeated guest star Christopher Lloyd !!!
Finally in 2004 "Tremors 4: The Legend Begins" came out. This prequel, set in 1889, once again starred Michael Gross (this time playing Hiram Gummer). Also along for the wild ride was Sara Botsford (Jumpin' Jack Flash), J.E. Freeman (Alien: Resurrection) and quite a few more. We actually get to see Graboids right after they hatch, in this movie that I can honestly say that was better than 2 and 3 combined!
