This will be a big week for the pups. Later today, Im going to try them on some puppy mush.
7/2/2008 (Day 23)
Wow the pups were active last night! I was awake with Moxie, who had her pups last night, so there was a lot of noise and light in the house. They must have thought it was play time all night!
This morning I fed them some puppy mush. There are a lot of mixtures you can use. Once the pups are a few weeks old, you have more options of what you mix up. When the pups are a few days old, or if you are supplementing their diets or raising orphan puppies, you really need to stick to something that is real easy to digest, and as close to mom's milk as possible.
I use Gerber baby food, rice cereal. Evaporated milk, some Esbilac Puppy Milk Replacer Powder, and some plain yogurt.
The puppy pan has a raised center, so the food goes to the sides, and hopefully keeps the puppies from swimming in the slop!
The little liver girl now is wearing a red collar.
After breakfast, the puppies go back to the back half of the pen, while I let Beauty in to clean up the dishes!

7/3/2008 Day 24
Boy were they loud! It is good to get the pups used to different surfaces. And since feeding time is such a mess, putting them in the puppy pen makes for easier clean up. Of course, Beauty does most of the clean up when we put the puppies back into the play area.
The pups are getting used to the food. This morning they had soaked puppy food added to the mash.
There is a low wall that Beauty can step over to get away from the pups if she wishes.

Day 25
The gang is getting a hang of it, and ate most of the slop this morning!
While they eat, I strip and mop the puppy room.
You will notice a lot of these tacky fake fur throws... they were on sale, and some of my puppy rugs needed the boot!

SoftMaple Puppy
Application
Follow a litter of puppies from birthday until they go to their new homes. The diary contains lots of pictures, tips on puppy rearing, some breed specific information,
and lots of information on the care of any breed of dog.
I started doing an on-line puppy diary since many of the people that would be getting one of my pups would not be able to travel here to see the pups. I did not
want
to put a bunch of cute puppy pictures online, and encourage anyone to have a litter just because they wanted to see cute puppies! Breeding dogs, if done the right
way, is a lot of work. Lost sleep and sometimes heartache. It takes a lot of time, effort and money to raise a litter of puppies. Once I started doing The Puppy
Diary, I realized I had a captive audience. These people logged on every day to see the pictures, and read what was happening. I used this opportunity to cram as
much education into each day as I could. Health, Coat issues, grooming, feeding, socializing, vet care, puppy evaluations, shipping puppies.... you name it! I tried
to
put it in The Diary. It was suggested that I make it into a book. Well here it is! There are 560 pictures and over 300 pages of living with and watching one litter
grow up. I am sure may conscientious, caring breeders raise litters similar to the way I do. Its is a good look into the time, money, commitment it takes to
bring
up a litter of pups. Some of the things that go on behind the scenes, that the eventual puppies owners (family), never realize go into the litter.
Enjoy my litter as I see them. Day to day
